Confirmed: Liverpool terminate loan deal

Liverpool have confirmed Ovie Ejaria has been recalled early from his loan spell with Rangers.

The midfielder linked up with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard at Rangers in June and made 28 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals.

Why has Ovie Ejaria been recalled? Five key things to know…

  1. Ejaria joined Rangers on a season-long loan from Liverpool in the summer.
  2. Linking up with former captain Gerrard, Ejaria enjoyed a good spell in Scotland making 28 appearances.
  3. Only Ryan Kent, another Reds loanee, completed more take-ons (14) than Ejaria’s eight in the Europa League.
  4. Both clubs have now confirmed he will return to Liverpool with immediate effect.
  5. Rangers mentioned problems settling in Scotland as one of the reasons for Ejaria’s loan being terminated.

Of Ejaria’s 28 appearances, 23 had been starts and the 21-year-old had completed the full 90 minutes of 16 occasions.

But, his loan spell as now been terminated with immediate effect, with Rangers citing problems settling in Scotland as one of the reasons.

In a statement released on the club’s official website, Rangers said: “Rangers and Liverpool have agreed to terminate Ovie Ejaria’s Ibrox loan period. Ovie will be returning to Liverpool immediately.

“The midfield player has not settled in Scotland and wishes to continue his career back with his parent club.

“Ovie arrived at Ibrox in June and played twenty-eight matches including eleven times in the Europa League, scoring twice for the Gers.

“Rangers thanks him for his commitment and efforts. Everyone at the club wishes him well for his future.”

Liverpool also released a statement of their own following the recall, saying: “Following discussions between the two clubs, as well as Ejaria and his family, it has been determined an early return to the Reds is in the best interests of all parties concerned.

“Liverpool would like to thank Steven Gerrard, his staff and everybody at Rangers for helping the 21-year-old develop and improve during his time at Ibrox – an experience the club believe has been extremely beneficial for his career.”

What next for Ejaria?

Speaking upon his loan to Rangers in the summer, tied in with a new contract at Liverpool, Ejaria stated his loan-term aim was to represent the Reds.

He said: “It’s a massive club, the club’s doing really well at the moment, so it wasn’t a hard decision at all.

“I’m just going to keep working hard and see where that takes me.

“I really want to be a regular at Liverpool Football Club, a massive club, so that’s my aim.”

But, having now returned to Liverpool, just before the January transfer window kicks into full swing, Ejaria’s immediate future will be in doubt – whether it is with Jurgen Klopp or away on loan once more.

A central midfielder, were he to stay at Liverpool, Ejaria would be competing with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and James Milner for a spot.

Ejaria has been tipped for success, but it may be worth the 21-year-old being sent on loan for the remainder of the season to ensure a constant stream of game time.

However, given the wording of Rangers’ statement, it would appear Ejaria’s eyes are set on stay with Liverpool and Klopp will welcome even fiercer competition for a midfield spot.
