Good news for Arsenal? Aston Villa reportedly pull out of transfer deal

Aston Villa have reportedly ‘pulled out’ of a deal to re-sign Gary Cahill.

Cahill made 31 appearances for Villa during a four-year spell at the club at the start of his career, before moving on to Bolton Wanders and then Chelsea.

Why have Villa scrapped Gary Cahill deal? Five key things to know…

  1. Gary Cahill has made almost 300 appearances for Chelsea since joining the club in 2012.
  2. However, the Blues’ club captain has fallen out of favour this season with the arrival of manager Maurizio Sarri.
  3. Cahill began his career at Aston Villa, with his former club recently linked with a move for the 33-year-old.
  4. Villa boss Dean Smith has highlighted a centre-back as his top priority in January, reports the Telegraph.
  5. However, Villa now look to be moving onto other targets as they are unwilling to pay a reported £4m for a six-month loan deal, while Chelsea would also prefer a permanent sale.

His stay at Stamford Bridge is approaching the seven-year mark and has yielded two Premier League titles along with a Uefa Champions League winner’s medal among a host of major honours.

But Cahill has plummeted down the pecking order under new boss Maurizio Sarri this season, with Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz his preferred combination at the back, as well as having Andreas Christensen as further centre-half competition.

According to the Telegraph, Villa manager Dean Smith had placed Cahill at the top of his January wishlist as he seeks to plug a leak that has seen the team concede 38 goals in 25 games so far this season, but he is now moving on to other targets after discovering that even a six-month deal could cost up to £4 million, including wages and a loan fee.

Sarri himself recently stated that the decision regarding the Chelsea club captain’s future would be in the player’s hands, not his own.

He told reporters: “It is not my decision, but it is up to him and the club.

“He is in the last year of the contract, he has to decide for a new contract here or another club.

“For the over 30 [players] the club usually offers only one year of contract. If he has an offer of three years, he can, of course, choose something [else at a different club].”

According to reports from Italy, Arsenal are seriously considering Cahill as an option for next month’s transfer window. They are without Rob Holding, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in December, and have conceded the second-highest number of goals (30) in the top half of the Premier League this season so far.

Gary Cahill’s glittering Chelsea career

Despite falling out of favour under Maurizio Sarri this season, Cahill has had an extremely successful time at Chelsea since joining the club in 2012.

To date, the 33-year-old has made 289 appearances at the heart of the Chelsea defence, chipping in with 25 goals and helping the club win two Premier League titles, a Uefa Champions League, a Uefa Europa League, last season’s FA Cup and the 2015 League Cup.

Cahill has also picked up 61 caps for the England national team and featured for Gareth Southgate’s side at the 2018 World Cup.
