Despite taking the lead, Arsenal surprisingly fell off in the second half, in the end only drawing 1-1 with Brighton.
Having rebounded from two successive defeats by beating Burnley, the Gunners were hoping to continue winning by taking on a Brighton side that had lost three straight games. However as it turns out, the Seagulls came to play and Arsenal misfired quite badly after a poor half-time change from Unai Emery. We rated their players out of 10, who got what?
Bernd Leno – 6/10
Came for crosses consistently, even getting (accidentally) headbutted in the face. Struggled a bit with the ball in the air but never shied away from contesting things. Could do little about the goal after a defensive deflection gave him no choice but to rush out.
Stephan Lichtsteiner – 2/10
Lichsteiner has to be the worst signing we have made in a long time.

Genuinely terrible. Forget his involvement in the Brighton equaliser for a second (but don’t forget it because the goal was, like, 80% his fault): he was bad from start to finish. Obviously he was never intended to be a starter but even as a back-up that arrived for free he is so unlike Héctor Bellerin in terms of his athletic profile as well as ability and he serves such little purpose for Arsenal that you want to demand that Arsenal get their money back even if they didn’t actually pay for him!
Hey @Arsenal, just send in a random fan from the stands to replace Lichsteiner at HT.

Sokratis – 4/10
Failed to organise the defence, resulting in the Gunners getting gutted time and again. Hurried and harried with the ball at his feet, even when under little pressure. A poor display.
Laurent Koscielny – 5/10
Competent. Which, given his age and the fact that injuries to team-mates has forced him to dramatically accelerate his return, is about as good as you could hope for. Taken off as Arsenal shifted shape.
Sead Kolasinac – 5/10
Ran hard up and down the left-flank but didn’t really use the ball well enough at all. Always willing, however.
Lucas Torreira – 6/10
His energy and blocking was essential to Arsenal’s progress (and their opening goal) but he wasn’t as dominant as usual. Seemed to be holding back for fear of picking up a yellow card (and thus missing the game against Liverpool). Something was just, off?
Granit Xhaka – 5/10
Passed well in midfield but was an absolute trainwreck when pushed into defence. Repeatedly exposed by long straight passes. Which is somewhat fair as he’s not a defender.
Matteo Guendouzi – 5/10
An oddly superfluous display insomuch as he ran around looking busy without ever actually doing anything of substance.
Mesut Özil – 5/10
Delightful outside of the foot pass in the lead-up to Arsenal’s opener. Not at his brilliant best, however, and was taken off at half-time with Arsenal chasing a result. Turns out he was very important to the team, however, as they only managed one shot without him (after conjuring six with him on the pitch). Emery getting it wrong? It can happen!
Alexandre Lacazette – 7/10
Outstanding work set-up Aubameyang’s opener; from leaving a pass when he was offside to holding the ball up under pressure superbly. Showed flashes of brilliance (especially in tandem with his strike partner) but cut an increasingly isolated figure. Was removed with half an hour to play in a tactical switch that didn’t really work.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 7/10
Ridiculous finish to give Arsenal the lead but missed an easy chance to make it 0-2 and became hurried and anxious as the game wore on. Tried to do too much and ended up doing nothing at all.
Alex Iwobi – 5/10
Came on at Ozil at half-time. Clearly added some pace and thrust to the side but left the Gunners missing a presence behind the strikers to knit play together. Not his fault, and he didn’t hurt the side but didn’t help either.
Aaron Ramsey – 5/10
Came on at Lacazette after 62 minutes. Ran hard as always.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 6/10
Came on at Koscielny after 70 minutes. Instantly showed the kind of direct running at right-back that Lichtsteiner was incapable of.
