Arsenal vs Fulham predictions, match preview & betting tips

Arsenal host Fulham on New Year’s Day looking for an immediate reaction to their 5-1 mauling at the hands of Liverpool.

Despite taking an early 1-0 lead at Anfield, Unai Emery’s side powerless to stop the Liverpool onslaught and left Merseyside with their tails firmly between their legs; the Gunners are now five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Fulham, meanwhile, have lost just three of their first eight games under Claudio Ranieri, are unbeaten in their last three outings, with two clean sheets during that time, and have moved to within a point of safety; the Cottagers now look like they can fight their way out of trouble having been totally hapless until Slavisa Jokanovic’s dismissal.

When is Arsenal vs Fulham?

Competition: Premier League

Venue: Emirates Stadium

Date: Tuesday, 1 January

Kick-off: 3 PM GMT

Match preview

Arsenal’s 22-game unbeaten streak is now a distant memory, Unai Emery’s honeymoon period is over and now the real work has begun at the Emirates.

Yes, it was against a rampant Liverpool side, but Arsenal’s 5-1 defeat on Saturday highlighted how certain members of Emery’s squad are really struggling to adjust to his passing system, although this has been magnified by the sheer amount of defensive injuries in north London.

That being said, Arsenal played themselves into trouble against a high-pressing Liverpool time and time again at Anfield and need an immediate response if they are to start closing the five-point gap on the Champions League places.

For Fulham, although you could not exactly say they are a totally rejuvenated team under Ranieri, they do look much more equipped for a relegation battle than they were under Jokanovic. The Cottagers are unbeaten in their last three games and have kept two clean sheets during that time; not bad for a side that has conceded more goals (43) than any other Premier League team so far.

A trip to the Emirates is never going to be easy for Fulham, but they will feel far more confident heading there now than they would have a month ago.

Where can I watch live?

Arsenal’s game against Fulham is a 3 PM kick-off and is therefore not on live TV in the UK.

US-based viewers can watch the game on fuboTV.

How Ranieri could make Fulham history v Arsenal

Fulham have locked horns with Arsenal 56 times previously in all competitions, winning eight, but have never come away from the Emirates or Highbury with all three points, picking up just five draws.

If you’d have tried to predict this game with Fulham under Jokanovic, you’d probably give them absolutely no chance and tip Arsenal to rack up the goals. However, Ranieri has helped his side keep two clean sheets in their last three games, with Fulham only losing three times under his guidance so far; it’s a long shot, but Ranieri is the man for underdog victories after all.

Head-to-head

Tuesday will be the 57th time Arsenal and Fulham have come together in all competitions, with the record heavily in favour of the Gunners.

Arsenal have won this fixture 38 times to Fulham’s eight, while the Cottagers last win against the Gunners came in the form a 2-1 home win in 2012.

Fulham have never won away against Arsenal.

Team news

Arsenal released a team news update on Monday afternoon.

Rob Holding, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Danny Welbeck and Konstantinos Mavropanos all remain sidelined with long-term injuries. Shkodran Mustafi, Hector Bellerin, Nacho Monreal and Mesut Ozil, meanwhile, all face late fitness tests to establish whether they can play against Fulham.

Alfie Mawson and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa are both expected to be in contention despite carrying knocks. Ranieri will be without defender Calum Chambers, who is ineligible to face his parent club.

Predicted Arsenal XI: Leno; Bellerin, Koscielny, Sokratis, Kolasinac; Torreira, Xhaka; Iwobi, Ramsey, Aubameyang; Lacazette.

Predicted Fulham XI: Rico; Odoi, Mawson, Ream, Christie; Seri, Anguissa, Bryan; Cairney, Mitrovic, Sessegnon.

Squawka predictions

Fulham may be steadily improving under Claudio Ranieri, while Arsenal may have struggled of late, but don’t expect that to affect the result here.

Fulham have never won away at Arsenal, while the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette will provide a very stern test to this improving Cottagers defence.
