Solskjaer "really looking forward" to working with one Man Utd player

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has vowed to give Marcus Rashford tips on his finishing in order to increase the striker’s goal tally.

Rashford has scored 38 goals in 146 appearances for United since breaking into the first team under Louis van Gaal in 2015/16.

What can Rashford learn from Solskjaer? Five things to know…

  1. Rashford is a regular for Manchester United and England but has scored just six goals in 23 club appearances this term.
  2. Solskjaer scored 126 goals in 366 matches for United between 1996-2007, winning six Premier League titles along the way.
  3. The Norwegian was renowned for his calmness in the penalty area and scoring important goals, such as his winning strike in the 1999 Champions League final.
  4. He has already received praise for giving Paul Pogba more freedom and plans to do the same with Rashford.
  5. Solskjaer has won all three of his games in charge of United so far, beating Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town and Bournemouth.

Solskjaer’s best season for United came in 2001/02 when he found the net 25 times across all competitions.

And the 45-year-old believes he can help Rashford to become a better goalscorer for the Red Devils.

“I think Marcus has got his own motivation to become the best player he can be,” Solskjaer said, according to the Express.

“He has got far more than I did in terms of his physical attributes, his pace, his strength and striking the ball from outside the box.

“But maybe I can give him a little bit of the nous I had inside the box. I’m talking about the little moves you make to get free, that little bit of calmness in front of goal.

“Marcus is only 21. He’s still learning. The most important thing I can see is to just settle him down in front of goal.

“I’ve seen him rush a few finishes. He thinks ‘I’ve got to get a shot off early’ when sometimes you just need to pass it past the keeper. I always say that the goal never moves. So I am really looking forward to working with him.”

“Man Utd haven’t changed much of Mourinho’s tactics”

United have scored 12 goals across Solskjaer’s three matches in charge so far, bagging five goals against Cardiff, four against Bournemouth and putting three past Huddersfield.

The manager Solskjaer took over from, Mourinho, was often criticised for his defensive outlook, while Solksjaer is renowned for his attacking approach in Norway.

However, the new man in charge claims United haven’t altered many of Mourinho’s tactics, instead focusing on injecting more freedom into the team.

“Tactics is one side of it but we haven’t changed many of the tactics,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “We’ve just asked them to go out and express themselves.

“Because we need to see what they’re capable of as well for when we get to the bigger games.

“Tactically, we’ll get time to work more, we get weeks now in January to work on the other side of it because it’s all been about us in the first couple of games.”

United next play on Wednesday, when they travel to Newcastle.
