Chelsea ‘agree Christian Pulisic deal’ – but have Dortmund already replaced him?

Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign Christian Pulisic next summer.

The 20-year-old American forward has long been associated with a move away from the Westfalenstadion and it seems this season could be his last in a BVB jersey.

Why the fuss over Pulisic? Five key things to know…

  1. Pulisic – born and raised in Hershey, Pennsylvania – joined Borussia Dortmund’s youth academy in 2015.
  2. He would make his Bundesliga debut coming off the bench against FC Ingolstadt in January 2016 – a game BVB won 2-0.
  3. A winger by trade Pulisic has made no fewer than 115 appearances for the German powerhouse, registering 15 goals and 24 assists in all competitions, but he’s only started in five of their opening 17 league games this season.
  4. His performances reportedly attracted the attention of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea.
  5. Pulisic, who has won 23 caps for the United States, sees his present deal with BVB expire in June 2020.

A move to England has longed been touted and according to German publication Bild he looks set to be on his way to Stamford Bridge after the culmination of this season.

The report suggests Chelsea will spend £45m to acquire Pulisic’s signature thus ending his four-year association with the Bundesliga club. Since breaking into BVB’s first team Pulisic has gone on to feature across 115 matches in all competitions but has been relegated to a squad role under current boss Lucien Favre.

Do BVB even need Pulisic after Jadon Sancho’s rise?

A reason behind Pulisic’s bit-part role this season has been the sensational rise of English winger Jadon Sancho.

Sancho, formerly of Manchester City’s youth set-up, joined BVB ahead of the 2017/18 campaign and has not looked back since.

Having assimilated under former boss Peter Stöger he’s become one of the first names on Favre’s team sheet. To date, Sancho has featured across 24 matches, has scored seven goals and created 10 for his teammates.

His performances have relegated Pulisic who has started in five of Dortmund’s league matches and completed the full 90 minutes in all but two.
