In a spectacular one-sided showing, Manchester United battered Bournemouth 4-1.
The Cherries were outclassed by an in-form United who have now won three straight under new boss Olé Gunnar Solskjaer. They’ve scored 12 goals, conceded 3 and played some impressive stuff. We rated all the players from Old Trafford.
Manchester United
David De Gea – 6/10
Didn’t have too much to do but looked solid doing what he did. Could do nothing about Aké’s header.
Ashley Young – 8/10
Helped United’s dominance by constantly playing high and wide. A confident and brave display that United will hope his ageing legs can reproduce, because it was absolutely fundamental.
Eric Bailly – 4/10
He was aggressive and confident whenever Bournemouth attacked United. A superb block to stop Josh King shooting at goal the highlight of a very solid performance (well, a very solid 80 minutes). A shockingly needless tackle on Nathan Aké to get sent off the lowlight. A high challenge on Charlie Daniels that may or may not have been a penalty somewhere in the middle.
Victor Lindelof – 7/10
Another consummate display from the Swede who is looking like the centre-back he is for Sweden.
Luke Shaw – 7/10
Looked healthy and sharp, bombing up and down the left.
Nemanja Matic – 6/10
Unbothered by Bournemouth’s midfield, he was able to pick out some spectacular passes. Failed to handle Bournemouth defensively whenever he was tested, though. A clear weak point.
Ander Herrera – 7/10
Neat and tidy. Helped out defensively and kept things moving in attack. A lowkey integral display.
Paul Pogba – 9/10
Scored opener with nice finish. Made countless forward runs, causing Bournemouth trouble every time. Defended, dribbled, devastated Bournemouth. This was an everything performance from Paul Pogba who now has 4 goals and 2 assists in the 3 games played since José Mourinho left Manchester United.
Jesse Lingard – 8/10
Always buzzing in and around the two forwards. Didn’t get a goal or assist but his movement was bright and utterly integral.
Anthony Martial – 7/10
Some superb runs down the flanks, including a delightful one that capped with a scooped assist for United’s third. Withdrawn late on as United had to adjust following Bailly’s red.
Marcus Rashford – 9/10
Reborn after Mourinho. An unreal assist for United’s opener, obliterating the Bournemouth defence. Constantly on the move, giving United options and causing the Cherries headaches. Bagged United’s third goal with a tasty finish. Withdrawn with 20 minutes left because of a slight groin strain to a standing ovation.
Romelu Lukaku – 7/10
Came on for Rashford after 69 minutes. Bagged a(n offside) goal with a delicious right-footed finish.
Andreas Pereira – n/a
Came on for Herrera after 75 minutes.
Phil Jones – n/a
Came on for Martial after 80 minutes.
Bournemouth
Asmir Begovic – 5/10
Dominated his penalty box. Couldn’t do anything about United’s first three goals and although he was weak on the fourth, by then it was over.
Steve Cook – 3/10
Shockingly bad. Didn’t even try to clear Rashford’s cross for United’s opener, let Pogba run ahead of him for United’s second and left a huge space behind him (into which Rashford ran) for United’s third. An evening to forget.
Nathan Aké – 6/10
Followed Rashford wide but then didn’t clear him out for United’s opener. Constantly overworked in defence but scored a superb goal.
Charlie Daniels – 5/10
Looked uncomfortable playing as a centre-back but never stopped working.
Jordon Ibe – 5/10
Ran hard but often found wanting when defending the far post. Probably not got a future playing wing-back.
Andrew Surman – 5/10
Could do little to contain United or impose himself on the game.
David Brooks – 7/10
A superb display despite the momentum of the match. His control, dribble and cross for Aké’s goal was a particularly brilliant example of his quality. A light shining in the darkness for Bournemouth. Withdrawn just after the hour.
Junior Stanislas – 5/10
Looked dangerous when pushing forward, exposing Nemanja Matic’s lack of mobility.
Diego Rico – 4/10
Got rekt by Rashford for United’s opener. Didn’t really have an impact after that.
Joshua King – 6/10
Played under Solskjaer in the Manchester United reserves and did his old boss proud with a hard-working display that did more to test United than anyone else.
Callum Wilson – 5/10
Isolated. Barely a factor. Taken off just after the hour.
Lys Mousset – n/a
Came on for Brooks after 65 minutes. Had a negligible impact.
Ryan Fraser – n/a
Came on for Wilson after 65 minutes. Didn’t really help his side.
Tyrone Mings – n/a
Came on for Aké after 82 minutes.
