Wenger: I'm "very happy" Emery has proved me right about Arsenal

Arsene Wenger is delighted his successor at Arsenal, Unai Emery, is proving that the squad he built is capable of challenging in the Premier League.

Wenger left Arsenal at the end of last season with many critics saying the squad needed a complete overhaul. Emery, however, has so far shown that with just a couple of new additions, the Gunners can be an effective force in the Premier League.

Can Unai Emery continue Wenger’s legacy? Five things you should know…

  1. Arsene Wenger joined Arsenal in 1996 and went on to win three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.
  2. But Arsenal last won the Premier League in 2004.
  3. Wenger left Arsenal last summer after 22 years at the helm.
  4. Emery took over for the 2018/19 season, signing Lucas Torreira and four other players.
  5. Arsenal are currently fifth in the table having lost just three of their opening 18 games in the league.

Wenger has taken great satisfaction from watching his old charges play some scintillating football this season, with players like Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang having a big impact.

Both forwards were brought in during Wenger’s reign, and the Arsenal manager has revealed how pleased he is that Emery is proving that the side is capable of being a top team in the Premier League.

“The team is in good hands and I always said that. A lot of people thought when I left the club that the team would need to completely rebuild – I never thought that. I am very happy that these people have been proven wrong,” he told beIN Sport.

The former Gunners boss says there is a new “defensive stability” Emery has brought to the team, an area often criticised when Wenger was in charge while highlighting the Spaniard’s good use of the transfer market.

“I think Emery is doing an excellent job,” Wenger continued.

“With the recruits he has brought in, it has brought a form of defensive stability and so I think everything is going well.”

Who did Unai Emery sign for Arsenal this summer?

The new Arsenal boss prioritised defensive reinforcements when he took over at the Emirates.

His first port of call was to sign Uruguayan defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira from Italian side Sampdoria for £26.4m.

He also brought in German stopper Bernd Leno for £22m from Bayer Leverkusen while agreeing a deal with Greek international centre-back Soktratis who cost a reported £17.6m from Borussia Dortmund.

All these players have contributed to an excellent start to the season from the Gunners, who face Brighton on the south coast on Boxing Day.
