Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey has reaffirmed his commitment to the club following the statements he released suggesting he was unhappy at the club.
The Ghanaian midfielder revealed that he was disappointed not to be playing more games after just seven starts this season throwing his future into doubt.
Does Thomas Partey have a future at Atletico? Five things you should know…
- Thomas Partey has been at Atletico Madrid since 2011, making his debut in 2015.
- The midfielder was linked to both PSG and Arsenal earlier in the season.
- The 25-year-old has started just seven of 17 league games this season.
- Partey suggested he was unhappy at the club following last weekend’s win vs Real Valladolid.
- The Ghanaian has since reaffirmed his desire to stay at Wanda Metropolitano.
The player’s future was thrown into doubt after the midfielder suggested he should be playing more but in a statement on the social media platform Twitter the Atletico man has sought to clarify his stance at the club.
“The Saturday after the match I made some statements that have not been understood well and I prefer to explain myself better. The Atleti is the club where I want to be and in which I would like to continue growing as a player, for the club and for the Aficion,” Partey revealed on Twitter.
“And it is true that I feel that I can still be more important and that is why I work hard every day. I do not want to conform and that’s good to be the best player I can be. Merry Christmas and Aúpa Atleti!”
The midfielder has played over 70 times in La Liga for Atletico but was clearly unhappy about his lack of game time this season.
The Spanish side are currently sitting in second place in La Liga, just three points behind leaders Barcelona and five points better off than City rivals Real Madrid.
Why did Thomas Partey say he was unhappy at Atletico?
The controversy started after the 25-year-old made comments after the game on Saturday that appeared to show his desire to leave Atletico.
Partey has only started seven games from a possible 17 this season and with the player staying fit and clear of suspensions he clearly felt he justified more game time.
“Sometimes I do not feel happy at Atletico,” Thomas told TV station Gol as cited by football-espana.
“If you want to change this feeling then you need to be playing in important games and feeling stronger, more confident.
“I have played well so far this season when I have been on the pitch.”
There is a lot of competition for places in the Atletico squad with Rodri arriving in the summer from Villarreal adding to a squad that already contained the likes of Saul Niguez and Koke.
Given the plethora of midfield options, the Ghanian was linked to both PSG and Arsenal earlier in the season.
With Aaron Ramsey set to leave at the end of the season, Partey’s versatility and well-rounded style could have made him the perfect replacement.
