Brentford vs Norwich City predictions, match preview & betting tips

Norwich head to Brentford on Tuesday looking to put pressure back on Championship leaders Leeds United.

The Canaries come into the game off the back of one of the most thrilling games of the season so far, eventually losing 4-3 at home to Derby County in a game where they were ahead three times, and had to leave the pitch for 25 minutes due to a floodlight outage.

When is Brentford vs Norwich City?

Competition: Championship

Venue: Griffin Park

Date: Tuesday, 1 January

Kick-off: 3 PM GMT

Match preview

Peter Crouch recently described Norwich City as the Championship’s ‘most impressive team’. Impressive? Possibly. Entertaining? Definitely.

No game proved just how intense it is watching the Canaries this season than their 4-3 defeat to Derby County recently; it was a game that quite literally had everything. However, despite the sheer amount of entertainment on offer, it was a defeat that has proved quite costly in their race for the Championship title; Norwich still sit in the second automatic promotion spot but have fallen three points behind leaders Leeds United.

Brentford have enjoyed plenty of playoff pushes and relatively successful seasons in recent years, but this one looks to be one where they’ll just be happy to push on to mid-table obscurity, sitting just five points clear of the relegation zone so far.

The Bees have put a three-game unbeaten run together recently, though, keeping two clean sheets in the process; a quality that will be vital in pushing them up the Championship table, and one that will be tested against a very fluid Norwich side.

Maupay vs Pukki: A clash of Golden Boot contenders

Brentford vs Norwich brings together two of the Championships hottest goalscorers in the form of Neal Maupay and Teemu Pukki.

Maupay has bagged 15 goals and six assists across his 1949 minutes of Championship football, while Pukki has matched that goal-tally and contributed four assists himself during 1954 league minutes.

Seeing these two goal machines slugging it out on Tuesday should be enough to whet anybody’s appetite; these two will be key in deciding who comes away with the valuable three points in their first game of 2019.

Can Brentford maintain their remarkable New Year’s Day record?

Brentford have an incredible record playing at home on New Year’s Day; in 10 January 1st league games at Griffin Park, the Bees have won six and drawn four.

Norwich, meanwhile, are without an away league win on New Year’s Day since a 1-0 triumph over Southampton in 1994, losing three and drawing three since then.

However, the Canaries are looking very strong indeed this season and Tuesday will be a big test of these two particular records.

Head-to-head

Tuesday will be the 58th time Brentford and Norwich have met in all competitions, with the two traditionally sharing a very close record; the Bees only just trail Norwich 22 wins to 26.

In recent years, however, Norwich have dominated this fixture, winning seven of their last 10 meetings and losing on just two occasions.

Team news

Brentford midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo could be back in contention for the visit of Norwich City after being left on the bench for Saturday’s draw at Birmingham City.

Sergi Canos took Mokotjo’s place at St. Andrews and will be looking to keep his place in the side as Brentford welcome his former club. Welsh defender Chris Mepham is a doubt, while Lewis Macleod and Emiliano Marcondes are also fitness concerns.

Emi Buendia will remain sidelined for Norwich with an ankle injury, while defender Jamal Lewis (hamstring), midfielders Moritz Leitner (ankle), Kenny McLean (ankle) and Louis Thompson (shoulder) are all still continuing their injury comebacks.

Norwich are also likely to be without Matt Jarvis and Carlton Morris.

Predicted Brentford XI: Bentley; Konsa Ngoyo, Jeanvier, Barbet; Odubajo. Sawyers, McEachran, Henry; Watkins, Maupay, Canos.

Predicted Norwich XI: Krul; Aarons, Zimmermann, Klose, Godfrey; Vrancic. Tettey; Cantwell, Stiepermann, Hernandez; Pukki.

Squawka prediction

Norwich may have lost their 4-3 thriller against Derby County, but they’ve shown more than enough this season to suggest they can secure promotion back to the Premier League and take apart any side in the Championship on their day.

Brentford have tightened up at the back, so it will be hard for Daniel Farke’s side to score as freely as they have been, but still, expect them to leave Griffin Park with all three points.

Brentford 1-2 Norwich City

Brentford vs Norwich City betting tips

1. Both teams to score @ 13/25

In Neal Maupay and Teemu Pukki, Brentford and Norwich have the joint-highest goalscorers in the Championship so far this season.

With that in mind, it’s hard to imagine a goalless stalemate in this one or a clean sheet from either side. Maupay and Pukki have been in fine form of late and the smart money would be on them both to pop up once again.

Key stat: Neal Maupay and Teemu Pukki are the Championship’s joint-highest goalscorers with 15.

2. Teemu Pukki to score in both halves @ 14/1

As previously mentioned, Teemu Pukki has been on fire this season. We expect this one to be a really tight game, with whichever of the two side’s high-flying strikers coming out on top deciding the game.

14/1 for Teemu Pukki to score in both halves, decide the game and go clear as the Championship’s top goalscorer may just be a winner.

Key stat: Teemu Pukki has scored twice in a game on three separate occasions since the start of November.

3. Norwich City to win @ 7/4

A win is vital for Norwich if they want to keep the pressure on leaders Leeds United at the top of the Championship.

The Canaries were mightily unfortunate to lose against Derby recently and although Brentford have tightened up and improved of late, Daniel Farke’s side should still have enough to take all three points at Griffin Park.

Key stat: Norwich City have only lost two of their last 10 meetings with Brentford in all competitions.
