Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has mocked Liverpool’s Premier League record in response to taunts from a fan on social media.
The Belgium international has faced a backlash from Chelsea fans after his departure from west London in the summer, but a few those fans might be ready to forgive him after he mocked a Reds fan on Friday.
A sore subject for Liverpool? Five things to know…
- Liverpool are top of the table after 20 games.
- They have yet to lose a game in the Premier League this season and have not lost a league match at Anfield since April 2017.
- However, the Reds haven’t been crowned English champions since 1990, before the Premier League era.
- Liverpool were previously English football’s most successful club in terms of ‘major honours’.
- But they were overtaken by arch-rivals Manchester United when they won the Europa League in 2017.
Courtois is currently holidaying in the United Arab Emirates during La Liga’s break over Christmas and the new year. On Instagram, the Los Blancos ‘keeper described Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi as one of the “most beautiful places [sic] he’d visited.”
A Liverpool fan decided that this was the moment to take a shot at the former Blue’s goalkeeping skills, replying to his post: “still can’t keep a clean sheet.”
Courtois fired back: “Still no Premier League.”
The fan in question has probably tuned out of La Liga since the start of the season when Courtois was struggling to settle in at Los Blancos. The 26-year-old has kept six clean sheets in his last eight appearances.
Courtois’ retort might not carry much weight by the end of the season either, as the Reds currently sit atop the Premier League table, seven points clear of Manchester City in second place.
Will Liverpool prove Courtois wrong?
Liverpool have not lost a Premier League match at Anfield since April 2017; equalling a club record run of 31 unbeaten home games.

Liverpool are unbeaten this season and currently lead the Premier League, seven points clear of last season’s champions Manchester City. Going undefeated doesn’t necessarily guarantee victory this season. The last Premier League team to win the title without suffering a defeat was Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ side during the 2003/04 season.
Arsene Wenger’s men finished the league 30 points ahead of Liverpool. Despite their unbeaten run, they did not earn the maximum number of points that season and were 10 points shy of the century City hit last campaign.
Draws in 12 games took 24 points from Arsenal that season, but Liverpool have only dropped six points from the three draws they’ve been held to this campaign.
The Reds’ next outing will see their unbeaten run thoroughly tested when they head to the Etihad to face last season’s champions Manchester City in the most anticipated fixture of the season so far.
