"Cantona-esque" forward the perfect striker for Chelsea, says former Blue

Former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino believes Marko Arnautovic would be ‘perfect’ for the Blues, comparing the West Ham United man’s mentality to that of Eric Cantona.

Arnautovic joined West Ham at the start of last season as a winger but has since been converted to a striker, scoring 16 goals during his 49 appearances for the Hammers; this has led to links to a host of big clubs, with Chelsea being the latest.

Marko Arnautovic perfect for Chelsea? Five key things to know…

  1. Arnautovic joined West Ham from Stoke City in July 2017.
  2. The Austrian was converted to a centre-forward during David Moyes’ tenure with the Hammers.
  3. Arnautovic has scored 16 goals in 49 games across all competitions for West Ham.
  4. His form has led to links to a host of big clubs, including Man United and now Chelsea.
  5. Tony Cascarino has compared his mentality to that of Eric Cantona, saying Arnautovic would be a ‘perfect fit’ for the Blues.

And, speaking to TalkSport (via the Evening Standard), Cascarino has said he would take the Austrian ‘in a heartbeat’.

“You know the one player I’d really want to take? Arnautovic – I’d take him in a heartbeat,” he said. “I think he’d fit perfectly into Chelsea.”

He added: “The thing with Arnautovic – he reminds me of that Eric Cantona mindset. He thinks he’s good enough to be up there at the top table, and he is.

“He was dreadful at times last year, but there’s a real player in there and he needs a challenge and maybe the challenge is West Ham?

“Arnautovic is a player capable of playing for one of the best teams in England.”

Where would Arnautovic fit in at Chelsea?

Should Chelsea decide to make a January bid for Marko Arnautovic, the 29-year-old would surely slot in as a centre-forward for Maurizio Sarri.

The Italian currently has Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata at his disposal but with the pair only scoring a combined six goals in the Premier League this season, their form is certainly under scrutiny.

Eden Hazard, Willian and Pedro are Sarri’s first choices for the wide areas and with Arnautovic’s new-found form through the middle, he could offer Chelsea a healthy balance of strength, craft and creativity through the middle.

Chelsea travel to Watford for their next game on Boxing Day.
