Dortmund outcast loaned to Bundesliga rivals after 509 days without a game

Borussia Dortmund outcast Sebastian Rode will join Eintracht Frankfurt on loan until the end of the season. 

The 28-year-old midfielder moved to Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2016 but quickly fell out of favour with the club, not featuring in a competitive game since the 2017 German Super Cup.

  1. After making his professional breakthrough with Kickers Offenbach, Sebastian Rode joined Frankfurt in 2010.
  2. The former Germany U21 international made 108 appearances during his four years at the club, before joining Bayern in 2014.
  3. The last four years have seen the midfielder struggle for first team football, making just 74 appearances combined for Bayern and Dortmund.
  4. His last first team appearance came in the 2017 German Super Cup.
  5. Rode is excited by Frankfurt’s ambition and looking forward to ‘contributing’ to their success over the next six months.

Dortmund confirmed the news with a tweet on their official Twitter account that read: “Sebastian Rode will join Eintracht Frankfurt on loan until June 30th, 2019.

“We wish him the best of luck!”

Meanwhile, Frankfurt’s sporting director Fredi Bobic said (via Marca): “We are convinced that we will further raise the quality of our squad with Sebastian.”

Frankfurt’s next competitive game is a Bundesliga clash at home to Freiburg on 19th January.

Rode ready to match Frankfurt’s ambition

Sebastian Rode’s spell at the Westfalonstadion has been incredibly tough, with the player managing just 22 first team appearances since joining Dortmund in 2016.

However, his return to Frankfurt, whom he played for between 2010 and 2014, represents a chance for Rode to get his career back on track.

And the 28-year-old is looking forward to helping Frankfurt achieve their ambitions over the next six months, saying: “The team is placed well and has lots of ambition in the next six months. Of course I want to contribute.”
