Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed Tottenham will take up the option to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract by one year, which will activate a £25 million release clause.
Alderweireld’s was heavily linked with Manchester United in the summer but ended up staying at Spurs, for whom he has made 24 appearances across all competitions so far this season.
How does Alderweireld’s release clause work? Four things to know…
- Alderweireld joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, signing a four-year contract with the option to extend by one year.
- His current deal expires at the end of this season but Spurs will extend it until the end of the 2019/20 campaign.
- By doing so, a £25m release clause will be activated. However, that release clause cannot be triggered until the final two weeks of next summer’s transfer window.
- It is likely Tottenham’s only chance to make more than £25m is to let Alderweireld go in the January transfer window.
Pochettino revealed the news of the imminent extension to Alderweireld’s contract in a press conference on Thursday.
The Argentinian labelled the move “obvious” and compared it to the one-year extension Jan Vertonghen agreed earlier this month – although there is no release clause in Vertonghen’s deal.
“Yes, for sure. It’s obvious. The same situation as Jan [Vertonghen],” said Pochettino when asked if Alderweireld’s contract will be extended (according to @BenPearceSpurs).
