Neville: This Man Utd star is probably Europe's best in his position on his day

Phil Neville has labelled Paul Pogba the ‘best midfielder in Europe on his day’ following the Manchester United midfielder’s resurgence under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 25-year-old re-joined Manchester United from Juventus in 2016 for a club-record fee of £89 million.

But despite winning the League Cup and Europa League since his return, public rifts with former boss Jose Mourinho have led to inconsistent form.

However, Pogba has weighed in with two goals and two assists during Solskjaer’s first two games as caretaker manager of the Red Devils, 5-1 and 3-1 wins over Cardiff and Huddersfield respectively.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, former Man United defender Phil Neville hailed Pogba as the ‘best midfielder in Europe on his day’ after his Old Trafford display against Huddersfield on Boxing Day.

“You play for Man United and you talk of freedom of expression, exciting football, go out there and score goals, attacking football, play with a smile on your face and it starts with the manager,” Neville said.

“Ole over the last couple of games has been really happy, saying the right things.

“They had the best player on the pitch and probably the best midfielder in Europe on his day in Paul Pogba, who has had a disappointing, horrendous last 18 months at the club because of the fall-out with the manager.”

Pogba has scored twice in his last two league appearances, in which he also has as many assists. Neville says he has the potential to consistently hit double figures per season in terms of goals.

Neville continued: “It looked like the shackles were off, playing with that freedom of expression, anything is possible-type attitude, playing with arrogance. The passing was back to his best.

“Look, he is the best player at the club when he is at his best and with performances like this he should be a 12-15 goal a season person – he hasn’t been that in his career so far but he can be.”

“Man Utd would have lost Pogba if Mourinho had remained in charge”

Neville also speculated that the 2018 World Cup winner could have moved on to a new club had Mourinho remained in charge.

He added: “I think they would [have lost him]. The relationship was gone. It was clear at that point.

“He was sat on the bench at the end. But in the last few games, he has been fantastic.”

Man United play their final game of 2018 when they host Bournemouth on Sunday, with Solskjaer’s side trying to close a six-point gap on fifth-placed Arsenal.
