Liverpool loanee outdoing Lionel Messi at what the Barcelona star does best

Liverpool currently have 16 players out on loan at clubs across Europe.

Some are hoping to earn work permits so they can play for Liverpool in the future, others are aiming to gain experience and impress Jurgen Klopp from afar, and the rest are already surplus to requirements.

So who are those 16 players? And how are they getting on at their loan clubs?

Here’s a ranking of all of them based on their form so far this season.

16. Anderson Arroyo

Club: KAA Gent
Position: Left-back
Age: 19
League appearances: 0

Anderson Arroyo was sent on an 18-month loan to Mallorca immediately after signing for Liverpool back in February. However, that loan was cancelled in the summer and he joined Belgian side Gent. He is yet to make a senior appearance for his latest club, playing a handful of games for their Under-21 side instead.

15. Shamal George

Club: Tranmere Rovers
Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 20
League appearances: 0

Shamal George, who will return to Liverpool in January, is yet to make a league appearance for Tranmere. All of his outings have come in cup competitions, and he has conceded eight goals in three games.

14. Connor Randall

Club: Rochdale
Position: Right-back
Age: 23
League appearances: 1

After spending last season on loan at Hearts in Scotland, Connor Randall is a little closer to home this term with League One side Rochdale. Unfortunately, the right-back suffered a fractured cheekbone after making just one league appearance. His loan ends next month, so it appears to have been a waste of time.

13. Allan Rodrigues

Club: Eintracht Frankfurt
Position: Central midfield
Age: 21
League appearances: 4

Having played only 174 minutes of league football since moving to Germany, it would be difficult to call Allan’s loan spell at Frankfurt a success so far. The excitement around the midfielder has been dampened by the fact he seems no closer to breaking into the first-team squad than he was when he joined as an 18-year-old in 2015.

12. Marko Grujic

Club: Hertha Berlin
Position: Central midfield
Age: 22
League appearances: 6

After spending last season on loan in the Championship with Cardiff City, Marko Grujic made the step up to the German top-flight over the summer, joining Hertha Berlin. However, he has only managed six league appearances after damaging ankle ligaments. Liverpool have opted against recalling him, so he could yet come good this term.

11. Ben Woodburn

Club: Sheffield United
Position: Winger
Age: 19
League appearances: 7

It has been a difficult season for Ben Woodburn, who has been tipped for stardom ever since breaking into Liverpool’s first team in cup competitions as a teenager. Still only 19, there is plenty of time for the Welshman to develop into a top player.

However, Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer has failed to cement a place in the Sheffield United team, his seven Championship appearances total just 155 minutes and include one start, suggesting his parent club should consider recalling him.

10. Sheyi Ojo

Club: Stade Reims
Position: Winger
Age: 21
League appearances: 9

As with other players, Liverpool saw enough in Sheyi Ojo’s Championship performances for Fulham last season to loan him to a side in one of Europe’s top five leagues. The winger has played nine times for Stade Reims in Ligue this term but is yet to provide a goal or an assist.

9. Taiwo Awoniyi

Club: KAA Gent
Position: Striker
Age: 21
League appearances: 13

Taiwo Awoniyi has struggled to make the step up from the Belgian second division – where he spent last season with Mouscron – to the top-flight. The striker has failed to score in 13 Jupiler Pro League matches so far, although he did find the net in a Europa League qualifier at the beginning of the campaign.

8. Ovie Ejaria

Club: Rangers
Position: Central midfield
Age: 21
League appearances: 12

Ovie Ejaria has made 12 league appearances since arriving at Rangers, and while some of his performances have been admirable, his form has dipped recently. Wearing the No.10 shirt means there is an expectation for him to provide goals, but Ejaria has scored just once in the SPL so far and has only provided one assist.

7. Loris Karius

Club: Besiktas
Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 25
League appearances: 10

Loris Karius has almost certainly played his last game for Liverpool. His double blunder in last season’s Champions League final saw Jurgen Klopp move for Alisson and sent Karius on a two-year loan to Besiktas. After a shaky start, the German’s displays have improved. He has conceded 10 goals in 10 league matches, and nine goals in five Europa League games.

6. Corey Whelan

Club: Crewe Alexandra
Position: Right-back
Age: 20
League appearances: 13

Corey Whelan has been a regular for Crewe in League Two so far this term, scoring once and providing another assist in 13 league matches. Out of contract with Liverpool at the end of the current season, whether his displays for Crewe have been good enough to earn a renewal remains to be seen.

5. Danny Ings

Club: Southampton
Position: Striker
Age: 26
League appearances: 11

After a promising start the season, Danny Ings looked as if he was returning to the form that saw Liverpool sign him from Burnley. But injuries continue to plague the striker, the latest being a hamstring problem that has kept him out in recent weeks. Still, he will be hopeful of returning soon and adding to his four Premier League goals under Southampton’s incoming new manager.

4. Adam Bogdan

Club: Hibernian
Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 31
League appearances: 13

“He still plays for Liverpool?” we hear you cry. Former Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Adam Bogdan might have earned a permanent move away from Merseyside in the summer if not for fitness concerns. After tearing his ACL while on loan at Wigan Athletic last season, Bogdan has now recovered and settled in well at Hibernian, where he has kept five clean sheets in 13 league matches.

3. Ryan Kent

Club: Rangers
Position: Winger
Age: 22
League appearances: 10

Steven Gerrard will have been more than familiar with Ryan Kent from his days at Liverpool, and the Rangers manager jumped at the opportunity to take the winger to Scotland in the summer. Kent has scored three goals in 10 league games and has gained plenty of European experience with six Europa League appearances.

2. Herbie Kane

Club: Doncaster Rovers
Position: Central midfield
Age: 20
League appearances: 18

Since joining League One side Doncaster on loan, Herbie Kane has provided a commanding presence in Rovers’ midfield, which is particularly impressive for a 20-year-old. Kane has scored two goals and provided three assists in 18 league appearances, and he scored a special goal in the FA Cup first round against Chorley, one of three goals he’s scored already in the competition this term.

1. Harry Wilson

Club: Derby County
Position: Winger
Age: 21
League appearances: 15

Harry Wilson is making quite the impact for Frank Lampard’s Derby.

He has scored seven goals in 15 league games, five of which have been from outside the box, including the above stunner. In fact, Wilson has more goals from outside the area than any other Championship player or Europe’s top five divisions.

Lionel Messi topped this particular list last season with eight long-range efforts, but it is Suso – another player with Liverpool connections – leading the way this season with four. Three spectacular left-feet, but Harry Wilson leads the way.

The Welshman also endeared himself to the Liverpool fans with an incredible free-kick against Manchester United in the EFL Cup, taunting Old Trafford with the famous ‘five European Cup’ celebration as both Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard once did.

The 21-year-old has even broken back into the Wales team, for whom he scored another impressive free-kick in the UEFA Nations League against the Republic of Ireland.
