Potential Man Utd candidate confirms plans to manage Inter Milan

Diego Simeone has admitted to telling Inter Milan “2,000 times” that he plans to manage them in the future.

Simeone spent two years at Inter as a player, winning the 1998 Uefa Cup in the process, and has been linked with the recently vacant Manchester United job, but he appears to have his eyes set on a future San Siro move.

Simeone’s Inter ambition: five key things to know…

  1. Diego Simeone made 84 appearances for Inter during a two-year spell, winning the 1998 Uefa Cup along the way.
  2. He began his managerial career with Racing Club in Argentina in 2006.
  3. Took charge at Atletico Madrid in 2011, winning La Liga and two Europa Leagues, as well as reaching two Champions League finals.
  4. His success at Atleti has seen him linked with jobs at some of Europe’s biggest clubs in recent years.
  5. Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager of Man Utd on Tuesday morning and Simeone has been tipped to take the helm in the summer.

The 48-year-old has quickly become one of the most highly-rated managers in world football since taking the reigns at Atletico Madrid in 2011, helping the club win a La Liga title, Copa del Rey and two Europa Leagues, as well as two Champions League final appearances.

But the former Argentina international has now alluded to a future move to the Serie A giants.

“I have told Inter already 2,000 times, it will happen,” Simeone told Radio Anchi’o (via Football Espana).

“I will continue to work day by day with peace of mind, I have one year left of my contract here and at the moment we are working very well.”

Simeone then added that he hopes Atleti can continue to work with the philosophy he has put in place.

“I hope to continue on the same path that we have worked on for the last 12 or 13 years,” he added. “My style is in accordance with the club.

“This club has a personality like many others – Juventus, Barcelona, Athletic Club Bilbao – so you have to get the players and personalities around that, they are who are important.”

Does Luciano Spalletti have a future at Inter?

Luciano Spalletti took charge of Inter in June 2017 and helped the club to a fourth-place finish in his first season in charge, delivering Champions League football for the first time in six years.

However, this season has seen the Nerazzurri exit the competition at the group stage, dropping into the Europa League.

And while Inter are third in the Serie A table, they are already 14 points behind leaders Juventus.

This has led to speculation surrounding Spaletti’s future at the club, with Mourinho touted for a potential return to Inter, having recently been sacked by Manchester United.

Inter director Piero Ausilio has dismissed these reports, though, claiming the club ‘already have a great coach’.

“The great respect remains for Mourinho,” he told reporters. “But, of course, that has nothing to do with Inter’s immediate future, because Inter have a great Coach and are absolutely going forward with this Coach.”
