Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has had his say on a fiery post-match confrontation with Mike Dean following his side’s defeat to Burnley.
Spurs missed out on the chance to move to within two points of Liverpool and Manchester City as they were beaten 2-1 at Turf Moor in a game shrouded in some controversy.
What happened between Pochettino and Dean? Five key things to know…
- Tottenham were beaten 2-1 by Burnley on Saturday afternoon effectively ending their Premier League title hopes.
- Chris Wood gave Burnley the lead in the second half from a corner but there was controversy surrounding the initial decision to award the set piece.
- Pochettino was visibly upset with the decision at the time, complaining to fourth official Craig Pawson.
- And it continued after full-time with Pochettino approaching referee Mike Dean, looking particularly angry after the confrontation.
- However, the Argentinian has refused to reveal what was said between the pair.
Burnley opened the scoring in the second half as Chris Wood headed in from a corner, but Pochettino was visibly unhappy at the initial awarding of the set piece as replays showed the ball had come off Jeff Hendricks last.
Tottenham managed to equalise through Harry Kane but Ashley Barnes scored a late winner for the home side, extending their unbeaten run to eight league games.
However, at the full-time whistle, Pochettino was shown in a heated confrontation with Dean, getting very close to the referee’s face appearing angered.
Immediately speculation grew as to what was said between the two, but Pochettino refused to divulge any information post-match.
“Of course when you feel so disappointed and upset you make some mistakes,” he told Sky Sports.
“We made a mistake on the pitch and I made a mistake after. I think I need to go to the dressing room [instead], wait there, get some water, relax.
“What happened on the pitch happened on the pitch.”
When asked if he could go into more detail on what was said, Pochettino simply replied: “No.”
Sky Sports also reported they had asked Dean for information on the confrontation, though the referee also refused to divulge what was said.
Pochettino to accept punishment
Given the nature of the confrontation, many expect Pochettino to be handed at least a fine by the FA, as many managers and players have received in the past.
And the Argentinian has confirmed he will accept whatever comes his way, though harbours some hope that he will not be punished.
“I think I will accept everything that happened,” he added.
“I hope not, but fine.”
