Real Madrid’s record-breaking signing plans to delay Bernabeu switch

Santos youngster Rodrygo Goes is reportedly preparing to delay his move to Real Madrid until 2020.

The 18-year-old forward was expected to join the 13-time European champions this summer, after Los Blancos completed a £40m deal for his signature, which is the highest transfer fee paid to a Latin American club.

Who is Rodrygo Goes? Five key things to know…

  1. Age: 18
  2. Career path: Santos, Real Madrid (expected June 2019)
  3. Senior appearances: 45
  4. Goals (assists): 9 (3)
  5. Has made 10 appearances for Brazil’s various youth teams (U20 and U17) registering six goals.

A graduate of Santos’ esteemed academy, which has produced Pele and Neymar, the Osasco-born winger is expected to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Vinicius Junior, who recently made the switch from Brazilian giants Flamengo to Real.

Such has been the buzz around him a number of European clubs were interested in his signature, but in the end Real won out, with the expectation of him moving to Europe once he turned 18 which happened last month.

However, considering all parties, it was best decided Rodrygo would join his new teammates after this season, but that has now been placed in doubt. Rodrygo told local reporters you won’t be seeing him wearing Real’s iconic white jersey anytime soon.

Meanwhile Santos president Jose Carlos Peres also told reporters that the club have requested to defer the move: “We have asked Madrid about this (to delay the move) and now we wait to hear back from them.

“This is still early on but we want to plan ahead.”

What can Real expect of Rodrygo?

Nominaly a left winger, although he’s capable of playing on the other flank or as a centre-forward, Rodrygo – who has been compared to Neymar in the past – has shown a keen eye for goal having bagged nine goals across his opening 45 senior outings for Santos.

The prospect of lining up alongside Vinicius, who has bagged three goals and created 12 more in 24 appearances for Real, is a tantalising prospect.

“With the qualities that he and I have, we will get to play several positions. Good players can play together,” Rodrygo told Brazilian daily Folha de Sao Paulo (via AS).
