Maurizio Sarri dismisses “impossible” links with Roma job

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has dismissed speculation linking him to Roma as ‘impossible.’

The Italian has been under pressure over the last few weeks following a run of three defeats in his last four Premier League games but has ruled out a move back to Serie A.

Is Sarri set to leave Chelsea? Five key things you should know…

  1. Sarri joined Chelsea this summer after leading Italian club Napoli to a runners-up spot in Serie A in 2017-18.
  2. The Tuscan plays an attractive brand of football known as ‘Sarriball.’
  3. Chelsea started the season well, remaining unbeaten in the league until late November, but have struggled recently with the manager questioning players ‘motivation’.
  4.  Some pundits suggested he was ‘done’ at Chelsea following their 6-0 defeat to Man City.
  5. The Italian has dismissed links with Roma as ‘impossible’ with his Chelsea contract running until summer 2020.

Chelsea beat Malmo in the Europa League on Thursday to buy their manager a bit more time following several poor performances in the Premier League and FA Cup.

The win over the Swedish outfit looked in doubt as the sides went in level at half-time but a convincing second half saw Chelsea run out 3-0 winners, thanks to goals from Oliver Giroud, Ross Barkley and a stunner from Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The win also ensured the club’s passage into the last-16 of the Europa League with a 5-1 aggregate scoreline, setting up a tie with Dynamo Kiev.

Following the victory, Sarri answered questions about his future.

“Of course no, I have a contract with Chelsea for next season so it is impossible,” Sarri responded when asked about the speculation by reporters.

In the four league games prior to beating Malmo, Chelsea have lost three, conceding 12 goals in the process, leading to speculation about Sarri’s future with a club notorious for a lack of patience if things don’t go well on the pitch.

With a top-four finish now in doubt thanks, in part, to Manchester United’s resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Chelsea’s manager needs to put a run of form together over the next few matches.

Chelsea’s next two games see them face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday before a match-up against Tottenham in the Premier League.

Sarri went on to admit his mind is very much focused on the City game, with his side looking to fix the issues that saw them hit for six by Guardiola’s men in their last meeting.

“It’s very easy that City is in our minds. We played two weeks ago and now we can try to solve this problem,” Sarri added.

Can Chelsea beat Manchester City and win some silverware?

Chelsea may have been absolutely hammered by Manchester City on February 10, leading to a lot of talk about the manager’s future, but it’s important to remember it was Sarri’s side that inflicted Manchester City’s first Premier League defeat this season.

When the two sides met at Stamford Bridge back in December, goals from N’Golo Kante and David Luiz saw Chelsea run out 2-0 winners.

There is no reason why Chelsea can’t reproduce a performance of that nature and get a victory in the cup final this weekend.

Manchester City will be heavy favourites and rightly so, given that they have scored a whopping 74 goals in just 27 Premier League outings this season, but they have shown they are not invincible.

Chelsea are one of four sides to have taken maximum points off Guardiola’s side in the top flight this campaign, alongside Crystal Palace, Leicester and most recently, Newcastle United.
