Every FIFA player knows how much fun can be had with speed merchants.
Some footballers have earned a cult status simply because of their video game statistics – think of Adriano and his 99 Shot Power in the older Pro Evo instalments.
But in FIFA, pace reigns supreme, and some players can really move.
Looking back over the previous 10 games and identifying the fastest player from each edition, there So what are those players up to these days? We’ve had a look into it.
FIFA 09
Gabby Agbonlahor AND Theo Walcott
Pace: 96 / 96
Acceleration: 96 / 96
Sprint speed: 96 / 96
FIFA 09 club: Aston Villa / Arsenal
Current club: Unattached / Everton
Gabriel Agbonlahor was as fast as a certain expletive, according to the Aston Villa fans, and perhaps still is. Rarely seen in the latter stages of his career with Villa, the 31-year-old is currently unattached after leaving Villa at the end of the 2017/18 season, during which he made only six appearances.
The striker’s speed was undeniably his main asset during his heyday, and he would often out-pace defenders before scoring. Agbonlahor remains Villa’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer with 73 goals.
Similarly, Theo Walcott could always count on his pace to make an impact for Arsenal. And like Agbonlahor, his best days are behind him – although he has proved a useful player for Everton since leaving the Gunners in January this year.
FIFA 10
Theo Walcott
Pace: 95
Acceleration: 94
Sprint speed: 96
FIFA 10 club: Arsenal
Current club: Everton
Walcott reigned supreme in the virtual world once again in FIFA 10 as he began to emerge as a regular for Arsenal and England.
FIFA 11
Cristiano Ronaldo AND Theo Walcott
Pace: 94 / 94
Acceleration: 93 / 93
Sprint speed: 94 / 94
FIFA 11 club: Real Madrid / Arsenal
Current club: Juventus / Everton
Cristiano Ronaldo was in his peak physical condition in 2010/11, when he scored 53 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions. He’d keep up those ridiculous statistics for the next seven seasons at Real Madrid before leaving for Juventus this summer.
At his fastest, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner not only used his pace to take on opponents but to reach incoming crosses before his marker or beat others to a loose ball in the box, ensuring he would become of the game’s most prolific goal scorers ever.
But even if Walcott lacked those attributes, he could still match Ronaldo in a foot race.
FIFA 12
Theo Walcott
Pace: 97
Acceleration: 97
Sprint speed: 96
FIFA 12 club: Arsenal
Current club: Everton
Ronaldo didn’t last long at the top as Walcott reclaimed the quickest player label in FIFA 12.
FIFA 13
Mathis Bolly
Pace: 97
Acceleration: 97
Sprint speed: 97
FIFA 13 club: Fortuna Dusseldorf
Current club: Unattached
The usurper to Walcott’s throne, Mathis Bolly’s four-year reign as FIFA’s fastest player began in 2013. The Ivory Coast international is now without a club, but he certainly made his mark at Lillestrom and Dusseldorf, if for relatively useless reasons.
Bolly was insanely quick but never really had anything to show for it – no trophies, no more than four goals in a single season – apart from a place on lists like the one you’re reading. That said, it’s still enjoyable to watch videos of him moving past opponents like they’re not there.
FIFA 14
Mathis Bolly
Pace: 97
Acceleration: 97
Sprint speed: 97
FIFA 14 club: Fortuna Dusseldorf
Current club: Unattached
There was still no stopping Bolly in 2014, but an old face changed that situation a year later…
FIFA 15
Mathis Bolly AND Theo Walcott
Pace: 97 / 97
Acceleration: 97 / 97
Sprint speed: 97 / 97
FIFA 15 club: Fortuna Dusseldorf / Arsenal
Current club: Unattached / Everton
Sorry, Mathis. Theo’s back.
FIFA 16
Mathis Bolly
Pace: 97
Acceleration: 97
Sprint speed: 96
FIFA 16 club: Fortuna Dusseldorf
Current club: Unattached
Oh. Theo’s gone again.
FIFA 17
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang AND Mathis Bolly
Pace: 96 / 96
Acceleration: 95 / 96
Sprint speed: 96 / 95
FIFA 17 club: Borussia Dortmund / Fortuna Dusseldorf
Current club: Arsenal / Unattached
A new name! And a worthy successor to the crown, even if Bolly was still level at the top with Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.
Having played as a winger before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2014, Aubameyang was turned into a centre-forward by Jurgen Klopp, which turned out to be a masterstroke. His pace was even more useful through the middle and he finished his Dortmund career with 141 goals in 213 games.
Now at Arsenal, the 29-year-old is showing no signs of slowing down both from a goalscoring perspective and in terms of miles per hour.
FIFA 18
Jonathan Biabiany
Pace: 96
Acceleration: 95
Sprint speed: 96
FIFA 18 club: Sparta Prague
Current club: Parma
There were high hopes at the San Siro when Jonathan Biabiany first broke into the Inter Milan first-team picture in 2010/11. However, things didn’t quite turn out as expected and the winger eventually found a home at Parma, where he played the best football of his career.
In fact, his performances earned him a move back to Inter, but Biabiany failed to take his second chance and is now back at Parma after spending a season on loan at Sparta Prague. Anyone who played with the Czech giants on FIFA 18 would have been treated to the game’s fastest player.
