Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says his “future is unknown”

Arsene Wenger has shed light on his future in football management stating he is waiting for the right opportunity to present itself.

Wenger, 69, left Arsenal at the end of last season after presiding over a 22-year reign in north London but has confessed his “future is unknown”.

Where does Wenger’s future lie? Five key things to know…

  1. Since leaving Arsenal, Wenger has been deluged with offers of work.
  2. The Frenchman was reportedly set to join AC Milan earlier in the season.
  3. Wenger was also a reported interest of Fulham when Slavisa Jokanovic was sacked, but he ruled out a return to the Premier League.
  4. Paris Saint-Germain wanted to make Wenger their director of football in the summer and reportedly remain interested.
  5. Since leaving football management Wenger has said he is ‘enjoying daily life’ and is unsure of his future.

The Frenchman is yet to return to football management following a two-decade stint at the helm of Arsenal, and despite being presented with innumerable offers to return to the hot seat, he is yet to receive one enticing enough to lure him back.

Speaking at the launch of the Sport for Good awards by Laureus, Wenger said: “my future is unknown, even to me.”

“I’m quite open you know, I enjoy daily life know and I have travelled a lot recently.

“I believe as well that sport today, in the world, has a huge responsibility. It’s not only about stars, it’s about values.”

Since Wenger’s departure the club have been under the tutelage of Spanish tactician Unai Emery, but results have not fared much better, with the Gunners currently fifth in the league – only five points better off than last term.

Off-field problems have also mounted after Sven Mislintat – as a significant recruitment under Wenger – parted company after encountering disagreements with director of football Raul Sanllehi.

Why Wenger rejected Real Madrid

During his tenure with the Gunners, Wenger reportedly had numerous offers to join Spanish giants Real Madrid, but wanted to continue his project in north London.

In May 2018, Wenger said: “After just one year the offer came from Real Madrid and although you are always tempted by Madrid, it was not a good moment for Arsenal. I was offered total control of the club.”

When asked about whether he would still be interested in the Los Blancos job, which could become available should president Florentino Perez choose to part from Santiago Solari at the end of the season, Wenger remained reticent on the future.

He said: “I can’t answer you because I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.

“My job is to get the best out of the players and I hope to continue doing that in the future, but first I have to get the best out of myself and I’m now looking for the best way to develop.”
