Chelsea “in trouble” ahead of Man Utd FA Cup tie, says Scholes

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes Chelsea are currently enduring a crisis under Maurizio Sarri.

The Oldham manager was speaking ahead of United’s blockbuster FA Cup fifth-round clash against the Blues, and he believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should look to take “advantage” of his opponent’s unhappy dressing room.

Are Chelsea currently in trouble? Five key things to know…

  1. Chelsea were enjoying a positive start to life under Sarri but their form has nosedived since the turn of the year.
  2. Prior to victory against Malmo on Thursday the Blues had suffered four consecutive away defeats, including their heaviest ever in the Premier League.
  3. Sarri recently questioned the mentality of his players and stated that talisman Eden Hazard is not a leader.
  4. Despite this, David Luiz has revealed that the players trust Sarri’s footballing philosophy and are fully behind the Italian.
  5. N’Golo Kante has also said he is enjoying his new advanced role, despite many criticising Sarri for deploying him higher up the pitch.

United themselves will be looking to bounce back from a discouraging midweek defeat against PSG in the Champions League, and Scholes feels the Monday night fixture at Stamford Bridge presents the perfect opportunity.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “Ole will want to win something as manager of United.

“The FA Cup, after the result against PSG, could be the only thing they could win. Chelsea look in trouble at the minute. Will they bounce back themselves? Ole’ll have to deal with that.

“They’ll be disappointed. Chelsea will be looking for a big recovery. From what you read it doesn’t look like a happy camp at the minute so hopefully United can take advantage of that.”

Scholes backs Solskjaer for permanent Man Utd job

Since Solskjaer took the helm from Jose Mourinho in December he has overseen 10 wins, one draw and the aforementioned defeat against the Parisians, and as such, Scholes believes the Norwegian has proven his worth and should be given the permanent job.

Scholes was an open critic of former manager Mourinho, previously saying he was “embarrassing” the club, but the club legend has been impressed with his ex-teammate for rejuvenating the side and evoking memories of past footballing panache under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I’d have no issues whatsoever [with Solskjaer getting the job],” he added. “With what he’s done for these last 11 games – I know people will start to question because now because he’s lost a game but that was PSG.

“That could happen to the most experienced manager in the world because PSG are a top team. I think for what he’s done so far he definitely deserves a chance.”
