Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson says Liverpool intend to do a Premier League and Champions League double this season.
The Reds are exchanging blows with Manchester City in the Premier League and the two sides are neck-and-neck at the moment, with both sides sharing the same number of points at the top of the table.
Liverpool’s road to the double: Five things to know…
- Liverpool haven’t won the league since the 1989-90 season.
- They last won the Champions League in the 2004-05 season and haven’t won it since, despite coming close last term.
- The last time the Reds won a league and European double was in the 1983-84 season.
- Jurgen Klopp’s men are currently second in the Premier League, with the same points as league-leaders Manchester City and have a game in hand over the Citizens.
- They play Bayern Munich in the last 16 on Tuesday night and will still face stiff competition from other sides if they make it through.
Liverpool are also in the mix in Europe and will entertain Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of their last-16 tie in the Champions League on Tuesday at Anfield.
Speaking to the media before the clash with the Bundesliga giants, Henderson said his side would like to win both the Premier League and the Champions League this season when asked which competition he would rather win.
“If we had to choose, we’d choose both,” he told reporters (via Goal).
“We prioritise game by game, no matter what competition it is, so Tuesday night for us is the biggest game of the season. And then so on and so on.
“It’ll be like that until the end of the season, that’s how we approach every game. That’s what we need to do, it’s not about favouring one competition.
“I feel we have a good enough squad to be able to challenge in both competitions as best we can, and hopefully at the end of the season we see we’re champions of at least one, if not both.”
The last time Liverpool met the Bavarians in the European Cup was in the semi finals in 1981.
Both legs ended all square, but the Reds advanced on away goals thanks to earning a score-draw on the road. Liverpool went on to win the tournament after defeating Real Madrid 1-0 in the final.

Liverpool are favourites against “inconsistent” Bayern
Bayern Munich right-back Joshua Kimmich believes Liverpool are favourites to progress, citing his side’s lack of consistency this season as the main reason.
“Liverpool are the favourites,” the full-back told The Telegraph. “They have lost one league game all season and have let in only 15 goals. But when you look at us, we are not as consistent as before.”
Indeed, Bayern are two points behind rivals Borussia Dortmund in their domestic league after losing four games and conceding 26 goals after 22 league games.
“Now, it’s a bit different. It’s a chance to develop, to find new ways to success. We are close to Dortmund, in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal, and still in the Champions League.
“So, not everything’s bad. But we need to improve our style of playing before we can compare to the best teams in Europe.”
