Sarri “not worried” about negative chants by Chelsea fans – results take priority

Under-fire Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri says he is worried about the club’s results rather than the negative chants directed at him by the Blues fan base.

The west London club crashed out of the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night following a 2-0 home defeat against a resurgent Manchester United.

How bad are things for Sarri? Five things you need to know…

  1. Goals from Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba secured United’s progression to the FA Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Chelsea.
  2. The Blues have won just three games in the Premier League since December 30th.
  3. Chelsea have conceded 13 goals in their last five games.
  4. Having previously been 11 points clear of United, they are now in sixth place behind both the Red Devils and Arsenal.
  5. Sarri has come under increasing pressure from the Chelsea fans, who aimed negative chants at their manager during the defeat to United.

Speaking to reporters following Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat – which saw them struggle to compete with United’s organisation and attacking pedigree – Sarri insisted that the results bother him far more than the upset directed at him from the supporters.

Sarri said (via Football London): “I am worried about the result, not about the fans.”

Asked whether he was aware that the fans were singing negatively about him and his tactics, he continued: “Not really very well. Sometimes yes.

The Blues supporters used expletives to drum home their point, which prompted Sarri to declare that he had not heard anti-Sarrismo chants before: “No, for everything there is the first time.”

With the club seemingly struggling to put the Italian’s ‘Sarri-ball’ into effect on the pitch, reporters asked whether the players were in complete understanding of what is expected of them in his system.

Sarri said: “Not completely at the moment, because especially in a situation like the second half when we need to move the ball faster, mentally and materially.

“We need more movements without the ball and need less actions individually because when you have spaces you can go for the individual action, but when the situation is like the second half you must move the ball faster and need more movement without the ball otherwise it is impossible to score.”

How long has Sarri got?

With the Blues struggling to even compete at times – let alone secure vital victories – the pressure is on Sarri to produce the results in order to avoid becoming the next man shown the door at Stamford Bridge.

Successive Premier League away defeats to AFC Bournemouth and Manchester City – 4-0 and 6-0 catastrophes respectively – plus their exit from the FA Cup, meaning they are no longer in a position to win the competition for a second year running, has left Chelsea’s season on a knife edge.

With United looking strong, Arsenal consistently competing in the top end of the league and Chelsea’s ill-form, their place in the top four come the end of the season is looking increasingly unlikely.

Sarri seems to be somewhat stubborn in his approach to matches, believing that his way is the right way but results and performances tell a different tale. A shock Europa League exit against Malmo on Thursday may well seal his fate.
