Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has confirmed the club are looking to agree a new deal with David de Gea by May.
De Gea, 28, will see his present contract expire in the summer of 2020 but the club are determined to retain services.
Will De Gea extend his Man Utd stay? Five key things to know…
- Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011, De Gea is considered by some to be the world’s best ‘keeper.
- Real Madrid and Juventus have been linked with the Spaniard in recent summers.
- Former manager Jose Mourinho was not confident on a new deal earlier in the campaign.
- However, the club has now expressed publicly its desire to tie De Gea down to a new deal “rapidly”.
- No Premier League ‘keeper has made more saves from shots outside the box this season than De Gea (43).
United have already been busy with contract renewals this season, handing new deals to Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Ashley Young, Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay.
Juan Mata and Ander Herrera are also of contractual concern and will be free agents this summer, however, the club are eager to tie them down to new deals, but Spanish compatriot De Gea remains the number one priority.
Speaking in a conference call on Thursday, Woodward spoke of his desire “to finish off the final few” contract renewals before the season reaches its conclusion.
“We are a long way through the [contracts] we had planned to do in this season,” he said. “But obviously we want to finish off the final few as rapidly as we can.”
Academy star Marcus Rashford, who has reinvigorated his career at Old Trafford since interim coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the helm, will also see his contract expire in 2020.
The Red Devils will want to keep hold of their prized assets, and having recently secured Martial’s services for a further five years, Woodward will now set his sights on Rashford.
Meanwhile, Solskjaer will be looking to bounce back from defeat against PSG in the Champions League Round of 16 first-leg on Tuesday, when his side travel to the capital to take on Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night.

‘Next communication will be to announce Man Utd’s next manager’
Having taken the position of caretaker manager following the dismissal of Mourinho in December, Solskjaer has revitalised United’s season.
The club have moved into the top four and have lost just once in the 12 matches Solskjaer has overseen – the aforementioned PSG defeat.
However, despite his recent successes in the North West, Woodward refused to lift the lid on the club’s next permanent appointment.
“I’m not getting into that,” he said. “The next communication will be when we announce the next manager.”
