Premier league fans ‘fear Liverpool dominance’, according to Phil Thompson

Premier League fans “fear Liverpool dominance” according to former Reds defender, Phil Thompson.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently sitting second in the Premier League but have a game in hand on table-toppers Manchester City.

Can Liverpool end 29 years of hurt? Five things you need to know…

  1. Liverpool are on level points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
  2. However, City have a superior goal difference to the Reds, who have a game in hand against Manchester United.
  3. The Reds have only lost one Premier League game all season, coincidently 2-1 against Pep Guardiola’s City.
  4. Liverpool haven’t won the league title since 1990.
  5. Former defender turned football pundit, Phil Thompson, believes Premier League fans are scared of Liverpool’s potential dominance.

The Reds are aiming to end 29 years of hurt by getting their hands on the Premier League trophy this season. Former club defender Thompson believes that if his former side finish the season as Premier League champions, it may start a period of “Liverpool dominance” in England’s top flight.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Thompson said: “A lot of fans are worried about the cycle coming around again, not just Manchester United.

“They are frightened. That’s why they are starting to get nervous of Liverpool winning the Premier League again.

“A lot of people don’t want it like the 70s and 80s again and a lot of people wouldn’t want Manchester United to do it again.”

“The Premier League is the holy grail”

Thompson believes that through all of their success in the Champions League, the Premier League is the one elusive trophy that has been on Liverpool’s minds for over a quarter of a century.

The Sky Sports pundit continued: “It’s been far too long.

“The Premier League has become the holy grail and maybe even the burden for too many years.

“But it would be the pinnacle and if Jurgen Klopp was able to pull it off in these days of the big money Manchester City and Chelsea have thrown at it, it would be quite unbelievable.

“Yes, we got to the Champions League final last year – we didn’t win, but what a wonderful occasion it was – and we remember 2005, but give me, and most Liverpool fans, the Premier League any day.”
