Harry Winks believes Tottenham Hotspur teammate Hugo Lloris doesn’t get enough credit for what he does.
The 32-year-old French goalkeeper, who’s captained Spurs since 2014, has been a near ever-present this season but has come under intense scrutiny.
Hugo Lloris at Spurs: Four things to know…
- Signed from Olympique Lyon in 2012 for a reported fee that could reach £11.8m.
- He would go on to make no fewer than 281 appearances in all competitions.
- Lloris has to date kept 101 clean sheets and conceded 298 goals.
- Yet to win silverware, but played in Spurs’ 2-0 League Cup final loss against Chelsea in 2015.
Lloris, who led France to a second World Cup title last summer, made headlines earlier in the campaign after being fined and banned from driving.
Nevertheless, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was comfortable retaining him as the club’s skipper and number one ‘keeper. He has so far made 27 appearances and played a key role in their recent Champions League round-of-16 first-leg win over Borussia Dortmund.
Pochettino’s men ran out 3-0 winners, but if not for some brilliant goalkeeping the scoreline would have been different. As far as Winks – who played the full 90 minutes – is concerned it was yet another proof of Lloris’ brilliance, especially the save he pulled off moments before the half-time interval.

“It was massive – it was a great save and the match-winning save as well, because if you go into half-time 1-0 down it’s a different game, but for Hugo to keep us in it the way he did was incredible and credit to him for doing that,” he told the club’s offical website.
“You can see that he’s in great form. He probably doesn’t get the credit he deserves at times because we’ve got so many high-flying players at the front doing so well at the moment, but people like Hugo pulling off saves like that, which was fantastic to keep us in the game – it’s just as important a match-winning moment for us as the other boys scoring up top.”
Big tests lie ahead
Lloris is arguably one of the more experienced members of Spurs’ squad having featured across 281 matches in all competitions. During those outings he’s kept 101 clean sheets (which covers 36% of his appearances) whilst conceding 298 goals (or one every 84 minutes).
There’s no doubt if Spurs want to achieve greatness this season then he’s got to play a big role. Just when it looked like they were out, Pochettino’s men find themselves in this season’s Premier League title race.
With 12 matches to go they’re currently third place in the league and five points behind leaders Manchester City, though Liverpool, second and level on points with the defending champions, have a game in hand.
Next month sees them visit Dortmund for their Champions League round-of-16 return leg. Only twice before (in 1962 and 2011) have the Lilywhites reached the European Cup quarter-finals. If they can prevent BVB from mounting an incredible comeback who knows how far they can go, especially with leading marksman Harry Kane set to return from injury.
