Premier League or Champions League? Jurgen Klopp picks the trophy he’d rather win at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has admitted he would prefer to win the Premier League title with Liverpool as the club is yet to win it.

The Liverpool boss steered his team to the Champions League final last year while The Reds are currently in second behind City in the league.

Does Klopp prefer the Premier League or Champions League? Five key things to know…

  1. Liverpool are unbeaten domestically, but trail Guardiola’s side by two points in the league.
  2. Klopp has never won either the Champions League or Premier League, reaching the final of the former last season.
  3. The German admitted Pep Guardiola is the best coach in world football.
  4. Klopp prioritises the league as Liverpool are yet to win it under its current guise, however he would still like to win the Champions League this year.
  5. Liverpool are the second-most successful team in English top-flight history, winning 18 league titles – only Manchester United (20) have won more.

The German manager was also asked about Man City boss Pep Guardiola, who Klopp showered with praise.

When asked to compare Jose Mourinho with Guardiola, Klopp told Sky Sport Germany : “I think Pep is the best coach in the world.

“Any other name could have come up [for comparison], so you do not have to compare him to Jose. Pep’s doing it pretty well!”

When asked about whether he would rather win the Champions League or Premier League, Klopp responded: “The Premier League because Liverpool have yet to win it.”

However Klopp added: “I would not really make a difference. I would like to have both, that would be my ultimate aim.”

Guardiola, head and shoulders above the rest?

It’s not at clear cut as you might think. Guardiola did revolutionise the game itself with his work with that remarkable Barcelona team between 2008 and 2012, and his subsequent teams Bayern Munich and Man City have profited from his ideas too.

However, there is one active football manager who has won more: Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese has managed to take 17 trophies: three Premier League titles, two Serie A, one La Liga and two Champions Leagues among them.

Guardiola meanwhile has 14, including seven domestic league titles and two Champions Leagues. Pound-for-pound Guardiola is arguably better, at least going on the metrics of titles, as Mourinho has been a manager for eight more years.

The Catalonian has won 1.4 titles per season, while Mourinho has won 0.94.
