Kevin De Bruyne hails Liverpool while explaining Man City dressing room atmosphere

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has hailed Liverpool for their season so far but insists his side can still sweep up the quadruple.

Pep Guardiola’s side have already wrapped up one trophy this season, beating Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final, but are second in the Premier League – a point behind Liverpool.

Can Man City win an unprecedented quadruple? Four key things to know…

  1. With two-and-a-half months of the season remaining, Manchester City are still in with a chance of winning the quadruple.
  2. City have already wrapped up the Carabao Cup, and have Champions League and FA Cup progression on their minds.
  3. But City are currently second in the Premier League, a point behind Liverpool with 10 games remaining.
  4. However, despite praising Liverpool for their performances this season, Kevin De Bruyne believes his side can still complete the quadruple.

City are still pushing on all fronts, with Champions League and FA Cup dates to look forward to over the next month as well as their busy Premier League schedule.

And De Bruyne has admitted it will be tough for City to retain their league title given the amount of games they are set to play in short spaces of time.

“It can be done,” the Belgian said of City’s quadruple dreams.

“You try to win game by game and if you come to the end stages you want to win the tournament.

“There are still ten games in the Premier League, a long way to go, and Liverpool are still there, so we try to win game by game.

“We don’t know where we will end up. We want to win every game, but with the schedule being so tough it gets difficult.”

But De Bruyne also conceded his club’s Premier League hopes are not in their own hands, with City having to rely on other sides to stop Liverpool en route to a first league title since 1990.

He added: “If we keep winning and they keep winning it goes to the wire, but if we win every game until the end of the season and it’s not enough you just have to congratulate Liverpool, as they will win with 99 points.”

The Belgian went on to praise Liverpool for keeping up with a City side who stormed to the Premier League last season, insisting the atmosphere remains the same at the Etihad.

“There’s not a different atmosphere in the dressing room as we are probably on the same level as we were then – but last year we were 12 points ahead, and now we are one behind,” he said.

“That shows Liverpool are doing well.”

De Bruyne sends warning to City team-mates

De Bruyne’s dreams of the quadruple came just days after he sent out a warning to any City team-mates not enjoying the pressure of the title race.

While City romped to the Premier League last season, things are a lot tougher this year round, with the club looking to become the first to retain the title since Manchester United in 2009.

“We just need to look at ourselves,” De Bruyne said.

“The schedule is so tough. We are there in every competition and playing well and winning so we just need to keep going.

“If you come here and don’t enjoy the pressure it’s better to leave!”
