Bayer Leverkusen coach in awe of starlet Havertz: “He’s the biggest talent since Kroos”

Bayer Leverkusen coach Heiko Herrlich has heaped the praise the club’s wonderkid Kai Havertz, even comparing his talents to Toni Kroos.

The 19-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a wonderful start to his career, scoring eight goals in 62 games across all competitions since making his debut against Werder Bremen in 2016.

During those games, Havertz became Leverkusen’s youngest ever Bundesliga debutant, their youngest ever goalscorer a year later and he also became the youngest ever player to reach 50 Bundesliga appearances.

Havertz has said in the past that he sees himself as more of a ‘Mesut Ozil-type’ player but Herrlich’s praise will not be unwelcome.

Speaking to DPA (via Bulinews), Herrlich said: “He’s the biggest talent I’ve seen since Toni Kroos.

“I thought before the World Cup that such a player could have helped the team and learned something. But I think the national team coach knows exactly what to do and who to call up.”

Havertz, who has also registered 15 assists in his career so far, has scored eight goals in 27 caps across Germany’s youth levels and, over the summer, was awarded the Fritz Walter Gold Medal – an accolade handed out to the country’s top talent in the under-19 category.

Havertz’ Leverkusen side is expected to be one of Bayern Munich’s main challengers in the Bundesliga this season and kick off their campaign with an away tie against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday evening.
