Unai Emery denies clash with Mesut Ozil

Unai Emery has blasted rumours that he had fallen out with German midfielder Mesut Ozil, insisting the reason he was left out of the Arsenal squad against West Ham was due to illness.

Ozil had endured a tough start to the season, struggling to find his form as Arsenal fell to defeats against Manchester City, at home, and Chelsea away.

However, he was still expected to feature against West Ham this weekend – rumours of a rift between Emery and Ozil began to circulate after the former Real Madrid man’s name was absent from the team sheet.

But, at a post-match press conference (via Chris Wheatley, Goal), Emery has cleared the issue up, claiming he was left out of the squad through illness.

The Spaniard said: “Why is this information? It isn’t true. I don’t know who started this. He was sick yesterday and we decided for him not to play today.”

Emery was also keen to stress the importance of today’s win while reserving special praise for another of his midfielders, Aaron Ramsey.

He added: “We needed to win today and to show our supporters the three points. It’s clear we need to improve and to not concede many chances like today.”

And on Ramsey: “He worked 90 minutes. Each moment he played when the team needed him. His speed and experience is very important for us. They can give him the ball in a difficult moment because he plays with high personality.”

The 3-1 win against West Ham gives Emery and Arsenal a much-needed three points to get them off the mark for the new season.

The Gunners will have the chance to add to that tally when they face Cardiff away on the 2nd of September.
