Arjen Robben has said his Bayern Munich understudies, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, possess the potential to have successful careers for the German giants.
Earlier this week, Robben announced he will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season after spending the last eight-and-a-half years of his career at the club.
How did Robben become a Bayern Munich legend? Four key things to know…
- Robben joined Bayern from Real Madrid in the summer of 2009, scoring 23 goals and winning the domestic double in his first season.
- The Dutchman became an integral player under Jupp Heynckes and scored the winning goal in the 2012/13 Champions League final, part of Bayern’s treble-winning campaign.
- He has won seven Bundesliga titles with the club, plus four German Cups and the Champions League.
- Robben has now announced his he will leave at the end of the season having scored 143 goals in 305 appearances across all competitions.
Gnabry and Koman, the wide players who will succeed Robben when he leaves, have experienced indifferent spells at Bayern up until now.
But Robben believes the duo can successfully fill his boots next season, telling Bayern’s official website: “We work and talk together every day, but it’s down to the young players themselves.
“You give tips when necessary, because you’ve got the experience in that position. But at the end of the day you have to work things out for yourself.
“You need to gain experience, work hard, never be satisfied and always try to improve and perform for the team. I hope they’ll be successful.
“I hope from the bottom of my heart they do, but it’s down to the them. They have a long journey ahead of them, but they have plenty of talent. When you speak about our positions with Serge and King [Coman], they’re two very good players.
“They want to improve, they want to prove themselves and they work hard. They’ve got great character, too. That pleases me. I hope they develop more in this way and play an important role in the club.”
Gnabry and Coman: the story so far
Former Arsenal midfielder Gnabry has scored three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions for Bayern, including two strikes against former side Werder Bremen at the weekend.
The 23-year-old spent last season on loan at Hoffenheim but is seen as a useful member of the squad at Bayern this term, breaking into the Germany team in the process.
Coman is already closing in on 100 appearances for Bayern having scored 16 goals and provided 22 assists in 97 matches since initially joining on loan from Juventus.
However, injuries have prevented the 22-year-old Frenchman from becoming a regular, but Robben’s exit could give Coman the freedom to make the right-wing position his own.
