West Ham “will not play long ball football,” insists newcomer Yarmolenko

West Ham United playmaker Andriy Yarmolenko has insisted that the side “will not play long ball football” this season under new manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Pellegrini is entering his first season in charge of the Hammers and his first back in England since he left Manchester City in 2016.

The east London club are expected to play a possession-based style that Pellegrini perfected in his time with the Citizens, with the club aiming to improve on last season’s 13th-place finish under now departed David Moyes.

Yarmolenko – who signed for the Hammers this summer from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund for an undisclosed fee – has stressed that the side are working hard to ensure that the team plays a better style of football this season.

Speaking with the official West Ham United website, Yarmolenko also professed how much he is anticipating the season ahead.

“I try to play well and I am feeling better with every game I play, but I need time to reach my best level, of course.

“With every game, I feel better about my relationship with my teammates on the pitch, but we must continue to work hard to get the best possible understanding.

“We are starting to find more combinations, but this is just the start. After another month of training and playing together, I am sure we will play better.

“I am enjoying being part of this squad,” he confirmed.

“We have many good players and the coach wants us to play football and not long balls and play attacking football, which I like.

“I am smiling because I am happy and I am always happy when I am playing football. Now I am really happy! I must continue to train hard and I will be ready for the start of the season.”

West Ham United face a difficult trip to Anfield on August 12 for their first game of the 2018/19 Premier League season.
