Carles Alena has revealed Barcelona teammate Ousmane Dembele “apologised for his failures” at the club.
After coming in for a lot of criticism about his attitude, Dembele has experienced an upturn in form this season and scored a sensational solo goal against Tottenham in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Has Ousmane Dembele lived up to his potential? Five key things to know…
- Dembele moved to Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for a reported €105 million.
- There have been many concerns around his attitude, with Luis Suarez urging him to “focus on football”.
- Dembele only featured in 23 games for Barcelona last season, scoring four goals.
- After helping France to win the World Cup, the forward has improved this season, scoring eight goals in 17 games.
- After his wonder goal against Spurs on Tuesday, teammate Alena has backed Dembele, calling him a “spectacular” player.
Alena was also in the Barcelona line-up on Tuesday as the Blaugrana played out a 1-1 draw with Spurs at the Nou Camp. Speaking to reporters after the game, Alena backed Dembele’s “spectacular” quality.
“Ousmane Dembele is spectacular and we all like him,” he said. “He showed his quality with another great goal.
“He knows he has had failures but we cannot kill him, we forgive him for everything and he has apologised.”
Alena also spoke of his own excitement at Barcelona reaching the last-16 of the Champions League, ready to test himself more after earning a call up to the first team.
He added: “Now we are all excited for the most beautiful and difficult part (of the Champions League).
“I’m very happy to be having all these tests, this is a really good week for me – the goal (against Villarreal), the Copa, my first-team number, I’m having a great time and learning a lot.
Barcelona’s next game is away at Levante on Sunday.
