Eriksen equalled Bale, but one teammate was unpopular with Spurs fans during the Burnley win

Spurs snatch a late winner to keep the pressure on Liverpool and Man City at the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over Burnley at Wembley.

Burnley gave no quarter to the north Londoners for most of this game, and Sean Dyche deserves a lot of credit for putting out a well organised and disciplined defence on Saturday.

Spurs grew increasingly frustrated as the match wore on. They were unable to break down the Lancashire outfit despite having the blue of possession.

The Clarets deserved a point for a courageous effort, but they were cruelly denied at the death when Spurs snatched a late win through Cristian Eriksen in injury time.

Tottenham have now gone 17 matches in the Premier League without drawing a single game, Only one team in the competition’s history has gone longer without drawing from the start of a season (Bolton – 18).

Here are three winners and three losers from Saturday’s clash.

Winners

Christian Eriksen

It was looking like Spurs were going to have to share the points at Wembley, as Burnley managed to keep them at bay until the very end of the game this afternoon.

However, Spurs, just like against Barcelona midweek, persisted to the bitter end and ratchet up the intensity in the later stages with ave after wave of attacks.

They finally got their reward in injury time via Christian Eriksen who, after receiving the ball from Harry Kane, fired home into the top corner.

Eriksen’s winner was his 42nd for the club, equalling the number of goals scored by Gareth Bale – only five players have more goals for the Londoners.

Joe Hart

The 31-year-old looked as sharp as ever against Spurs this afternoon. He made several key interventions and distributed the ball excellently.

His big moment came with 15 minutes to go in the second half when the Englishman nimbly hit the deck at lightening speed to deny Erik Lamela’s shot from six yards out.

Despite having to make that save, Hart was well protected this afternoon and special credit should go to Sean Dyche, who sent out a well organised and tenacious back five, which succeeded in frustrating Spurs for most of the afternoon.

The former England number one was unlucky not to keep a clean sheet, but Spurs’s relentless late surges were too much for Burnley in the end.

Oliver Skipp

Tottenham handed a full debut to 18-year-old Englishman, Oliver Skipp, who started against Burnley in midfield alongside Moussa Sissoko, Dele Alli and Erik Lamela. Skipp is the fifth youngest Premier League starter for Tottenham after Stephen Carr, Andy Turner, Philip Ifil and Gareth Bale.

The youngster, who earned his place in the side after consistently playing well in Spurs’ youth set up, was impressive at Wembley.

The midfielder, who hails from Welwyn Garden City, slotted comfortably into Tottenham’s midfield, was composed in possession, showed great movement off the ball and distributed it well among his more senior team mates. One to watch for sure.

Losers

Hugo Lloris

Spurs’ ‘keeper is still suffering with, potentially disastrous, lapses in concentration, as he almost handed Burnley a goal at the end of the first half.

The incident occurred just before the break when France international spooned the ball 20 yards from his six yard area directly to Phil Bardsley, when he had al the time the world to make a myriad of better decisions.

Bardsley, wasted no time and lashed in a nicely weighted cross  to the head of Ashley Barnes, who couldn’t quite lea high enough to direct it goalwards.

As inexplicable as they are, errors like this aren’t rare for the Frenchman and Spurs fans are growing increasingly frustrated with his carelessness in possession.

Huddersfield

The Terriers were probably expecting their rivals on the other side of the Pennines to stumble against Spurs and would’ve been relishing taking three points from their home clash against Newcastle United, which would’ve seen them lifted out of the relegation zone.

Burnley produced a valiant performance against Spurs, and scratched, clawed and scrambled right until the death, but the Londoners burst their bubble in injury time when Cristian Eriksen snatched a victory.

Huddersfield were defeated 0-1 to Newcastle and remain third from bottom.

Chelsea and Arsenal

The Gunners and the Blues would’ve expected to be making their trips to south coast  – against Southampton and Brighton respectively – with a five-point gap between them and their rivals in north London, as Burnley looked as if they’d done enough to scrape a draw in this one.

Instead, both sides will have to fight to keep the pressure on their north London rivals as Spurs grabbed a late winner and Man City and Liverpool won’t be taking their positions for granted either. Things are hotting up at the top pf the table.
