Everton boss Marco Silva's classy reaction after FA confirmed Jurgen Klopp fine

Everton manager Marco Silva believes Jurgen Klopp should not be fined for his celebration following Liverpool’s late winner in the Merseyside Derby.

Klopp ran onto the pitch to celebrate after Divock Origi’s 96th-minute goal against the Toffees, which has sparked conversation among managers and pundits alike.

Was Klopp wrong for his celebration? Five key things to know…

  1. Liverpool won the Merseyside Derby 1-0 thanks to a dramatic winner from Origi scored, with Klopp running to the middle of the pitch to celebrate with Alisson.
  2. Klopp has been criticised for it by some, but Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola sympathised with the German.
  3. The FA have since charged Klopp with misconduct, with the German being fined £8,000.
  4. But Silva believes the German should not be fined by the FA, understanding the emotion of the celebration.
  5. Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 18 games against Everton across all competitions, last tasting defeat in October 2010.

Silva’s Everton were on the receiving end of the celebration, with Jordan Pickford making a crucial mistake in the dying stages of the game, allowing Origi to nod in.

But the Portuguese has revealed he did not see Klopp’s charge onto the pitch at the time, only viewing the incident post-match. And Silva believes Klopp should have escaped a fine for the celebration.

“In that moment I didn’t see what Jurgen did,” he told reporters in a press conference.

“Now I saw and for me, it’s not a matter. It’s the emotion of the game, it’s a normal situation. He’s celebrating.

“It’s not something he has planned for sure. I don’t know if we had scored in that moment what would be my reaction. If you ask me, I think he shouldn’t (have been fined) but the FA has to decide what the rules are.”

Premier League managers react to Klopp’s charge

Silva is not the only Premier League manager to give his opinion on Klopp’s celebrations, with the likes of Neil Warnock, Pep Guardiola and Maurizio Sarri all giving their thoughts on the matter.

Warnock himself had previously hit out at Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo for over-celebrating a dramatic win against Cardiff in the Championship season, labelling the Portuguese a disgrace for not shaking his hand when the final whistle went.

But the Cardiff manager, who celebrated his 70th birthday on Saturday, had no problems with Klopp’s sudden burst of emotion.

“I thought it was lovely,” he told reporters.

“He said he apologised to Silva. As long as you shake the manager’s hand after.”

Warnock also went on to hit out at those who make the rules in football for not understanding emotion, speaking before news of any action being taken on Klopp was confirmed.

He added: “I’m sure he’ll get disciplined because there’s no excuse for celebrating such a wonderful goal in the 96th minute because people who make the rules have no idea about emotion!

“There’s no rules for emotion. It’s such an emotional game. It’s moments like that, you can’t legislate for them. I could have done it on Friday!”

Manchester City manager Guardiola also sympathised with Klopp, telling reporters: “There are a lot of emotions in that moment. I did it against Southampton (last season). I was not happy to do it but sometimes it is what it is. Things happen in your mind and your heart.

“When you win, people say it is your personality. When you lose, people say it is disrespectful.”

While Chelsea boss Sarri admitted that although it is better to not over celebrate, he could understand Klopp’s reaction to the late winner.

He said: “You have to understand the situation: the derby, the goal in the last minute, maybe in the last seconds of the match. It can happen. It’s better not to do something like that, but I can understand him.”
