Former Real Madrid star trolls Mourinho after costly Man Utd loss

Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas has hit out at Jose Mourinho after Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

United lost to their bitter rivals at the weekend after Xherdan Shaqiri netted a second-half brace, widening the gap between clubs to 19 points and resulting in Mourinho’s sacking on Tuesday morning.

Why did Casillas take aim at Mourinho? Five things to know…

  1. Casillas and Mourinho have an abrasive relationship dating back to their time together at Real Madrid.
  2. In November, Casillas stated that he regrets not confronting Mourinho at the Bernabeu.
  3. He said: “I think if it happened all over again, I would have taken the bull by the horns and faced Mourinho.”
  4. Mourinho hit back, saying that Casillas’ comments came from “an interview with someone who is at the end of his career.”
  5. After United suffered defeat against Liverpool, Casillas finally responded to Mourinho’s words.

The Spaniard’s comments came before news of Mourinho’s dismissal but were certainly felt as he took to social media to mock the then-under pressure United manager.

He wrote on his Twitter account: “According to a Portuguese newspaper, someone said that a player like me (37 years) is at the end of his career. Completely agree!

“My question is, for that newspaper: in the case of coaches, when and at what point do you see that they are no longer to lead a team or train?”

What happened between Mourinho and Casillas at Real?

Mourinho and Casillas enjoyed success during their time together with Los Blancos, winning La Liga in 2011/12 as well as the Copa del Rey during the Portuguese’s maiden campaign at the helm.

But their relationship soon turned sour after Casillas made a pact with Barcelona captain Xavi to tone down the severity and bitterness of El Clasico for the benefit of the Spanish national team.

Mourinho saw this as an act of betrayal and Casillas soon found his place in the starting XI under serious threat, first being dropped for Antonio Adan in 2012/13, and then being completely displaced by Diego Lopez following his arrival in the winter transfer window.

Casillas was able to retain his starting berth under Carlo Ancelotti the following season, but the Spaniard soon left for Porto, believing his dip in form “was an inheritance from the previous era.”

The two have never rekindled their past relationship and remain at loggerheads to this very day.
