'He's the enemy' - Troy Deeney promises to 'smash' former Watford teammate in Premier League clash

Watford striker Troy Deeney says he will have to smash “Richarlison” when his side meet Everton on Monday evening.

Richarlison left Vicarage Road and, alongside former Watford manager Marco Silva, joined Everton in the summer who host his old side on Monday evening in the Premier League.

How good is Richarlison? five things you need to know

  1. Richarlison signed for Everton in the summer for a £30m fee, which is set to rise to £50m.
  2. Since arriving at the club, the Brazilian has notched seven goals in 13 games in the Premier League.
  3. The Brazil international scored with each of his first three shots for Everton.
  4. Richarlison has won more fouls (133) than any Premier League player since his debut.
  5. All 12 of his Premier League goals have been scored under Marco Silva.

Deeney, who used to share the dressing room with the Brazilian, was full of praise for the striker before adding his desire to “smash him” on Monday evening.

“You can see his [Richarlison’s] potential daily, his enthusiasm for football is up there and he’s now getting the national team looking at him,” Deeney told the club’s official website.

“But, I don’t want to talk him up too much because I’m going to have to smash him on Monday!

“On Monday he’s the enemy.”

The Watford striker made his Premier League debut at Everton’s home and claims he will thrive off the energy coming from the stands when the Hornets travel there.

“I made my Premier League debut there in a 2-2 draw,” said the forward. “I have fond memories and it’s a nice moment to reflect on.

“I like Everton, they have an old stadium and the fans are right on top of you. I enjoy it and it’s a good time to be up there.”

Watford will face what has proven to be an impossible task over their history: winning at Goodison Park. Out of their 13 encounters with Everton on the road they have failed to win any, losing 19 of their 26 meetings since their 2-0 victory in 1982.

Everton’s push for the top six

Everton haven’t won a trophy since their 1995 FA Cup triumph against Manchester United. The club have not been crowned top-flight champions since 1987 whilst their highest finish in the Premier League was in the 2004/05 season, finishing fourth under manager David Moyes.

The Toffees have finished outside the top six for the last four seasons, but a return to the European qualification spots could be a possibility this campaign, as the club seem reinvigorated under Marco Silva.

Everton have only conceded 17 goals in the Premier League so far, only one more than Tottenham Hotspur and the fifth-fewest in the league. A win against Watford would see them draw level with Manchester United on 23 points, but they would leapfrog the Red Devils with a superior goal difference.

Silva’s men have an uphill battle after Monday evening’s game as they take on champions Manchester City and Spurs in their next two Premier League fixtures.
