Jamie Carragher compares Premier League boss to Spurs’ Pochettino

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher thinks Marco Silva could be “Everton’s version of Mauricio Pochettino”.

Silva took the reigns at Goodison Park over the summer, after a long and drawn out pursuit of the former Watford boss, and has had a promising start to life with the Toffees.

Can Silva be ‘Everton’s Pochettino’ and help the club break into the top six? Five key things to know…

  1. Mauricio Pochettino joined Spurs in 2014 and has led them to three consecutive top-three finishes in the past three seasons.
  2. After a spell with Hull City, Marco Silva lasted just 26 games in charge of Watford before being sacked.
  3. Silva finally joined Everton in the summer and is looking to help the club finish in the top six for the first time since 2013-14.
  4. A promising start has Everton sitting in seventh, two points behind Manchester United.
  5. Jamie Carragher has compared Silva to Pochettino, with Everton facing Spurs later this month.

Despite failing to win in their past three games, Everton are currently seventh in the Premier League, just two points behind sixth-placed Manchester United.

And, speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football before Everton’s 2-2 draw with Watford, Carragher heaped praise on the work being carried out by Silva, stating that he needs to be ‘Everton’s Pochettino’ if he is to push the club into the top six.

“I’m a big fan of him (Silva),” he said, “and we mentioned before who’s the one team they (Everton) could maybe take (Tottenham).”

“He has to be Everton’s Pochettino, that’s what he has to be. To get into that top six is very difficult. If they don’t get a centre-forward, it won’t happen.”

Carragher then compared Everton and Tottenham, adding that the clubs are following similar paths, and that Silva could be the key in the Merseyside club taking the next step.

He added: “A few years ago, when David Moyes was at Everton, it was them and Spurs trying to break into that top four.

“Look where Spurs have gone; new stadium coming. Everton have got that stadium coming in a few years and fingers crossed for Everton, he [Silva] can be that man.”

Can Everton get back on track?

After a promising start to the season, Everton have failed to win in their last three games, losing to Liverpool before consecutive home draws against Newcastle United and Watford.

That run has seen the Toffees slip back behind Man United into seventh place, although Marco Silva’s side still remain just two points behind the Red Devils.

Everton’s resolve will be tested this month, though, as they face Manchester City away and Tottenham at home in their next two games.
