Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot will have no matchday involvement until he signs a contract extension, according to club chief Antero Henrique.
Rabiot has been at loggerheads with the PSG hierarchy over a new contract at the Parc des Princes and is yet to agree fresh terms.
What is Rabiot’s contract situation? Five things to know…
- Rabiot will see his present contract expire at the end of the season.
- French outlet RMC Sport have claimed Rabiot has called off talks with the Parisians after the club tabled an offer.
- It is reported that Rabiot is unhappy to be earning significantly less than some of his teammates – he is presently on around £55,000 per week.
- Rabiot has previously opened the door on a move away from the club.
- French publication Paris United have suggested president Nasser Al-Khelaifi recently told sporting director Henrique to cancel negotiations with Rabiot after it emerged he had been told the club would be open to transferring him to Barca.
There has been much uncertainty surrounding Rabiot’s future at the club, but this latest conflict could spell the end of his time in the French capital, with Liverpool reportedly making contact with the 23-year-old in recent days.
In a recent interview with Yahoo Sport (via Football Espana), Henrique said that negotiations are currently off and that Rabiot will be “indefinitely benched” until he signs a new contract.
When asked whether negotiations had resumed, he said: “At this point, no.
“The club decided this after a meeting that I had with the player.
“The player informed me that he will not be signing a new contract and that he wants to leave the club as a free agent at the end of the season [also the end of his contract].
“For the player, the consequences are clear — he is indefinitely benched.”
Where could Rabiot end up?
There have been a number of possible destinations touted for Rabiot, including remaining with his current employers.
Arsenal are set to lose Aaron Ramsey at the end of the season and could be tempted to ask questions of the Frenchman in order to bolster their midfield options.
Juventus have also been alerted to Rabiot’s availability and would be keen to add further quality as they seek continental success.
One such club who would fit Rabiot down to a T is Barcelona, who have forged a reputation for accelerating the growth of technically gifted players – the Frenchman is the archetypal Blaugrana player and would fit in seamlessly were he to relocate to Catalonia.
PSG have also encountered this problem before, but Rabiot ultimately remained in the capital, and it would not be out of the question to see the two parties put their differences aside and come to an agreement again.
