Robbie Savage thinks it is a “two-horse race” for the Premier League title this season, comparing Liverpool and Manchester City to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
After Manchester City beat Everton 3-1 on Saturday, Liverpool overcame rivals Manchester United by the same scoreline on Sunday to reclaim top spot in the Premier League.
Can anyone catch Man City and Liverpool? Five key things to know…
- Defending champions Man City are currently second in the Premier League, with 44 points and just one defeat.
- Liverpool are a point ahead in first, having gone unbeaten in their first 17 games so far.
- Spurs are the next closest side to the top two, sitting five points behind Man City in third but have lost against both already this season.
- Robbie Savage has compared Liverpool and Man City’s dominance to “Messi and Ronaldo”.
- The two sides face off in a vital clash on January 3.
That result means Liverpool remain unbeaten in the Premier League so far, while Man City haven’t lost a league game against an opponent from outside the ‘big six’ since their 4-0 defeat to Everton in January 2017.
And Savage, speaking on BBC’s Radio Five Live, has narrowed the title race down to these two teams this season, saying they’re “on a different planet”.
He said: “Let’s talk how good Liverpool are though, magnificent. It’s a two-horse race for me – Liverpool and Man City.
“They had a great win in midweek. They’ve been energetic and dynamic. They’ve got a plan, they’ve got an idea, they’ve got a system.
“Liverpool and City are on a different planet, they’re a bit like Messi and Ronaldo.”
How will the Premier League title race be decided?
With just a single point separating Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after 17 games, it is looking increasingly likely that their clash in January will be the deciding factor in the title race.
Both sides have looked comfortable against almost every other major opponent, sweeping aside the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Man United with relative ease, while their consistent form is showing no signs of stalling soon.
The last game between these two finished 0-0 at Anfield back in October, with their next meeting in January looking more crucial by the day.
Liverpool travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday night before City host Crystal Palace on Saturday.
