Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp not focussing on summer signing's mistakes

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has brushed off the talk surrounding Alisson’s mistakes this season and says the goalkeeper has been ‘outstanding’ for the Reds since his arrival at the club.

The £67 million signing was at fault for Jesse Lingard’s goal in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday, spilling a cross from Romelu Lukaku straight into the path of the England international to tap in.

Klopp backs Alisson’s form over mistakes: Five key things to know…

  1. Liverpool boast the best defensive record in the league this season having conceded just seven goals so far.
  2. Many believe Alisson and defender Virgil van Dijk are responsible for the Reds’ improvements at the back.
  3. But Brazil ‘keeper Alisson was also at fault for a goal in Liverpool’s win against Leicester City.
  4. He did, however, make a vital save in the last minute of the Reds’ Champions League victory over Napoli.
  5. Klopp says Alisson’s mistakes are ‘absolutely no problem’.

The Liverpool boss claimed Alisson had not been affected by his mistake against United, mentioning that he ‘looked good’ at the club’s Christmas party on the evening of the match.

“That goal was absolutely no problem. We had a Christmas party on Sunday night – he was good, I think – he looked good!” Klopp told reporters ahead of his side’s clash with Wolves on Friday.

“Maybe that’s a good example; I knew it before that it will happen. He did so outstanding so far and now he’s made two mistakes [since the start of the season] – obvious mistakes where it is clear.

“He lost the ball against Leicester and [then against United] the ball dropped, everyone saw how it was – it was a delivered ball then the knee was in the wrong position, so then the ball goes back to Lingard. Things like this happen.”

Klopp has also claimed that ‘any goalkeeper in the world’ will make the sort of mistakes that Alisson has made so far.

“It is much more important to be there in all the other situations. Not in a spectacular way, just catch the balls you can catch,” the German added.

“These kind of mistakes will always happen for all goalkeepers in the world. He has no problem with that and I have absolutely no problem with that.

“Even if it was a more decisive thing, things like this happen. It is not about the moment, it’s really about all the things – the good things – you can do. The good things you influence on in our game.

“That’s what we know, what we have seen, so it was absolutely no problem.”

£67m – Were Liverpool right to splash the cash on Alisson?

Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool decided to splash such a hefty fee on Alisson, despite his excellent 2017/18 campaign for Roma.

He became the Premier League’s most expensive ever goalkeeper, before Kepa Arrizabalaga quickly stole that title after his move from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea.

But the fact that nobody is dwelling on Alisson’s mistakes in a red shirt prove just how good a start he’s made to his Anfield career.

There is absolutely no doubt that he has made a huge impact on Klopp’s side so far this season. He has made countless good saves and already won the Reds a huge chunk of points.

Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius were good goalkeepers, but Alisson is on another level and Liverpool were absolutely right to invest as much as they did in him.
