Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted it is unlikely he will recall Harry Wilson from his Derby County loan, but hasn’t ruled it out entirely.
Wilson has excelled playing under Frank Lampard this season and is garnering a reputation for long-range wonder goals, most notably against Manchester United in the League Cup in September.
Do Liverpool need to recall Harry Wilson? Five key things to know…
- Harry Wilson made his Liverpool debut in the FA Cup against Plymouth in January 2017.
- The 21-year-old made a loan move to Hull City at the end of last season, impressing with seven goals in 14 games.
- This form led to a recall to the Wales national team, for whom he has scored two goals in eight caps.
- Wilson joined Frank Lampard at Derby County in the summer, scoring eight times during his loan spell so far.
- Lampard recently admitted Wilson does have a recall clause in his loan, but Klopp says Liverpool are unlikely to exercise it.
Earlier this month, Lampard admitted that Liverpool do have the option to recall Wilson from his loan and although Klopp has now admitted that it could happen, he has been quick to stress that it is highly unlikely.
“I am really happy with what Harry is doing,” he said. “It is fantastic. Sometimes it is really good to leave home. I think Harry left at the right moment.
“Now he is with Frank and it is a really nice job Frank is doing. It is outstanding. It is finally England has a lot of good young managers. It is cool.
“If you ask me a week earlier in the transfer market would we do anything – probably not. Will we do anything now we have two centre-halves left? Not likely, because they are not out for a long time, but we have to judge it.
“That is the same with Harry, if something happens in our wing position why would I say we would not do it [recall him]?”
Klopp then confirmed that it would take desperate circumstances for Liverpool to exercise their recall option, while also praising Derby and their win over the Red Devils.
He added: “Only if we really need him would we trigger that option.
“Derby are a fantastic team. I like watching them. How they played against United is a role model game [in beating Mourinho’s side in the League Cup]. Derby were outstanding.”
Does Harry Wilson have a future at Liverpool?
Based on his comments, Jurgen Klopp is clearly a fan of Harry Wilson and may well see to utilise his talents next season.
Despite already boasting attacking talents such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Xherdan Shaqiri, Klopp will no doubt like more reliable cover than the injury-prone Daniel Sturridge.
The former Dortmund manager has also shown he is not scared to throw youngsters into the heat of battle, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Dominic Solanke all getting significant playing time during his tenure.
Wilson has scored eight goals in 19 games at Derby so far, helping the club to fourth in the Championship table.
