Manchester United have sacked manager Jose Mourinho following their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
Mourinho had been in charge at Old Trafford since May 2016, winning the Europa League and EFL Cup in his first season.
The Red Devils also finished second in the Premier League last season, but a torrid start to this campaign has seen them fall 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, as well as being 11 points from a Champions League spot.
Mourinho had seen Man United safely progress to the Champions League knockout rounds, but this was ultimately not enough to save his position at the club.
A post on the official Manchester United website read: “Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.
“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”
Man United’s first post-Mourinho game is an away trip to Cardiff on Saturday.
