Man Utd’s ‘number one target’ to replace Mourinho responds to Old Trafford links

Mauricio Pochettino has responded to suggestions he is being lined up as Jose Mourinho’s replacement at Manchester United.

Mourinho was dismissed from his post at Old Trafford on Tuesday morning, with Man United’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield on Sunday proving to be the final nail in the coffin.

Is Pochettino the ideal man for Man United? Five key things to know…

  1. Mauricio Pochettino took over at Spurs in 2014 and has turned the club into  Champions League regulars.
  2. After spending two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho was sacked by Man United on Tuesday.
  3. Many feel Spurs would deliver trophies if Pochettino was backed better in the transfer market.
  4. Regardless, Pochettino is an expert in building a squad for a long-term project, a revered quality at Man United.
  5. Pochettino has insisted he is focused on managing Spurs for the time being.

Pochettino has been at Spurs since 2014 but has consistently been linked with the managerial post at Manchester United; links that will only strengthen now that the job is vacant.

The 46-year-old has now responded to those claims, though, insisting he is “focussed on delivering his job.”

“After five years, there’s a lot of rumours that happen about my position here,” he said ahead of Tottenham’s EFL Cup clash with Arsenal on Wednesday. “I cannot answer this question. My business is trying to ensure the best job at this club.

“I’m focussed and focussed tomorrow on delivering my job. What more do I need to say [to fans]?”

The ex-Argentina international also expressed his sympathy for Mourinho, sending his best wish to his “very good friend.”

“I want to send my best wishes to him,” added Pochettino. “I feel so sorry because I know him very well, I have a very good relationship with him.

“He is a very good friend. It is sad news what happened today.”

Do Spurs have the budget to keep Pochettino?

There’s absolutely no doubting Mauricio Pochettino has done a fantastic job at Tottenham so far.

The former Southampton manager has taken Spurs from European race also-rans to genuine Premier League title challengers during his four-and-a-half years at the club.

However, despite their progress in league finishes, Tottenham are yet to win a trophy under Pochettino, with many feeling there is a disparity in investment on the pitch when compared with other members of the ‘big six’.

This was highlighted in the recent summer transfer window, when the north London club failed to secure any new signings at all.

This is definitely not an issue Pochettino would have at Manchester United if he were to make a move there; the Red Devils spent £74m on new recruits over the summer and have the budget to back any new manager they bring in through the door.

Man United have already stated that they will not be bringing in a permanent manager until the end of the season. When that time comes, Spurs may well have a fight on their hands to keep Pochettino.
