Man Utd's "obvious" Mourinho replacement? Serial trophy-winner backed to make PL move

Arsene Wenger has backed former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, who has been linked with Manchester United, to manage in England.

Since leaving Real Madrid in the summer, Zidane has been the foremost name linked with the United job as current manager Jose Mourinho continues to under-perform. Former Arsenal boss Wenger believes that, if the former France captain wants to be a top manager, he should make England his next destination.

Could Zidane end up at Manchester United? Five Things To Know

  1. Zidane left Madrid on his own terms after winning three successive Champions League trophies.
  2. In his three-and-a-half seasons at Real Madrid, Zidane boasted a win percentage of 69% and averaged a trophy every 97.6 days.
  3. It has been suggested Zidane could replace Didier Deschamps as France manager, with Les Bleus star Antione Griezmann open to this possibility.
  4. However, current Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been under pressure since the start of the season and his side currently sit sixth in the Premier League.
  5. And Wenger believes that should Zidane go to England if he wants to “work at the top.”

Wenger, like Zidane, is currently out of management having left Arsenal after 22 years in the summer. Speaking from a similar position, he outlined the type of managerial roles that are possible for his fellow Frenchman to take.

He said: “[Zidane] is in a very difficult position. He’s been at the biggest club in the world and can only go to the second biggest club in the world after that.

“But he can go to a different aspect of management. A more long-term project and being involved in building a club or [he] goes straight back to a team who can compete and win the Champions League, which won’t be easy.

“In his case, I’d go for a different aspect of [the] job.”

With 22 years of Premier League experience, Wenger knows what English football is all about. The Frenchman is the most decorated manager in the history of the FA Cup, lifting the trophy seven times, won three Premier League titles as well as seven Community Shields and he had his say on the possibility of Zizou coming to the English game along with the difficulties he might face.

He added: “Why not? Honestly, if you want to work at the top it has to be in England.

“However, with Brexit, there are many uncertainties. Will the Premier League continue to dominate economically the football world? We’ll find out very soon.

“But, at the moment, England is the only country where six or seven teams can fight to win the league. In many other countries, you know who has won the championship in December, sometimes in countries like France you can it even in September!”

Will Manchester United sack Jose Mourinho?

The links between Zidane and Manchester United are based as much on Mourinho’s performance as they are on the former Madrid coach’s availability. Rio Ferdinand has dubbed Zidane the “obvious” option to replace Mourinho during a recent BT Sports appearance, but the former United defender also expressed scepticism over the likelihood of a managerial change at Old Trafford any time soon.

Why? Because of the lack of alternative candidates, in Ferdinand’s view, but another big reason could be that the decision would reflect badly upon Ed Woodward; United’s executive vice-chairman is yet to hire a manager capable of mounting a true title challenge since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down.

What is more, Mourinho has publicly quipped that he will be due a hefty severance pay, one rumoured to be worth £12m, should the club dismiss him. He would also point to the Europa League and League Cup trophies, along with last season’s second-place, albeit distant, finish in behind reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City.
