In a helter skelter night of football at Old Trafford, Manchester United and Arsenal played out a 2-2 draw.
It was a game seriously short on quality, especially in defence as both sides took turns handing goals to each other. Here we rated every single player out of 10. How did they score? Read on and find out!
Manchester United
David De Gea: – 7/10
Colossal error for Arsenal’s opening goal. Did a Karius, in effect. But redeemed himself slightly with several good saves after that, including one absurd stop from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (the first goalkeeper to stop an Auba shot for over 100 days).
Eric Bailly: – 7/10
Unsurprisingly Bailly was assured, cool, confident and aggressive. Defended his flank well and a couple of loose touches aside, looked every inch the defender United have been crying out for. You wonder why he hasn’t been playing more.
Chris Smalling: – 3/10
Just fell over trying to mark Mustafi for his opening goal. A pathetic bit of defending that summed his United career up.
Marcos Rojo: – 7/10
A baffling display where he was mostly solid defensively before gifting Arsenal a go-ahead goal with two errors in 10 seconds. But in attack he was the one who twice stepped up to drag United back into things. First with a superb free-kick that led to United’s first equaliser and then with a raking long pass straight from kick-off to create United’s second equaliser.
Diogo Dalot: – 4/10
Worked his socks off but was clueless in attack and overwhelmed in defence.
Ander Herrera: – 8/10
Tenacious. Gave United’s midfield the bark and bite that Mourinho has been crying out for. Flew all over the field getting stuck into everyone wearing teal; helping to set the tone of the game and frustrate the Arsenal advances.
Nemanja Matic: – 5/10
Was literally on the pitch.
Matteo Darmian: – 5/10
Worked hard running up and down the left side of the field. Didn’t get the ball much because, y’know, he’s Matteo Darmian.
Jesse Lingard: – 7/10
An energetic display. Defended tenaciously and always looked to stop Arsenal from building from the back, then added so much movement and dynamism in attack. Showed great instincts to stab United level just seconds after Arsenal had taken the lead. Bizarrely taken off soon after.
Marcus Rashford: – 7/10
Pulsating performance, constantly driving United forward. Rarely received much co-operation from his team-mates but was undaunted and kept on trying to make something happen.
Anthony Martial: – 7/10
Well taken equaliser, smashing the ball through bodies into the back of the net. Looked positive with the ball, and worked hard off it. Left the field just after the hour having picked up a knock.
Romelu Lukaku: – 6/10
Came on for Martial after 62 minutes. Caused Arsenal’s defence no end of trouble by simply existing; but provided much less dynamism than Martial had managed to.
Marouane Fellaini: – 5/10
Came on for Rojo after 72 minutes. Put himself about but predictably brought the level of the side down.
Paul Pogba: – /10
Came on for Lingard after 75 minutes.
Arsenal
Bernd Leno: – 7/10
Could do nothing about Martial’s goal. Otherwise he commanded his area well, collecting crosses and coming for through-balls.
Shkodran Mustafi: – 5/10
Eluded Smalling to give Arsenal the lead, but then found himself getting run ragged by Marcus Rashford in defence. Hideously unaware defending for Lingard’s equaliser cancelled out the good work his goal had given.
Sokratis: – 7/10
Showed great pace to nullify Rashford’s central runs. Defended well in general despite his team-mates being useless.
Rob Holding: – 5/10
Positionally unaware for United’s equaliser. Left the field injured after 35 minutes.
Héctor Bellerin: – 6/10
Well shepherded by Matteo Darmian. No, seriously. Although you got the sense that had Arsenal looked for him more they could have hurt United more.
Lucas Torreira: – 8/10
Completely unafraid of the occasion and prevented United from penetrating through the middle of the pitch. On occasion when they did get in, Torreira was there to mop up and bail his team-mates out.
Matteo Guendouzi: – 7/10
On the end of some rough challenges but never let it faze him. Constantly looking to set Arsenal’s attack away.
Sead Kolasinac: – 4/10
Unconvincing in defence and frustratingly placid in attack even though he was constantly in loads of space. Embarrassingly unaware for Lingard’s equaliser.
Aaron Ramsey: – 5/10
Offered very little going forward and a hefty challenge saw him depart at half-time.
Alex Iwobi: – 5/10
Defended well, but nowhere near as effective as he would have liked to be with the ball.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: – 6/10
Completely cut off from his team-mates for an hour. Came alive after Lacazette was introduced; had a shot on target that didn’t go in!
Stefan Lichtsteiner: – 5/10
Came on for Holding after 35 minutes. Was alright.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan: – 7/10
Came on for Ramsey at half-time. Energised Arsenal’s attack and added real vertical thrust. Scored a gorgeous goal that was (correctly) ruled out for offside.
Alexandre Lacazette: – 7/10
Came on for Iwobi after 64 minutes. Scored a lovely equaliser and provided the focal point Arsenal’s attack was crying out for.
