Mark Clattenburg explains why Colombia should have gone down to 10 men vs England

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg believes Colombia midfielder Wilmar Barrios should have been shown a straight red card after appearing to headbutt England star Jordan Henderson.

With the World Cup Round of 16 clash heavily poised at the Otkrytiye Arena, tensions began to rise and tempers were threatening to spill over after Barrios appeared to lash out at the Liverpool skipper.

The Three Lions were preparing for a free-kick on the edge of the Colombian penalty area when the incident occurred and amidst the uproar between both sets of players, referee Mark Geiger brandished a yellow card in the direction of the Boca Juniors midfielder.

The decision was made after consultation with VAR, though the referee made the call without reviewing the incident himself, which has since sparked backlash.

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg – who has been working with ITV during their coverage of the World Cup – believes the referee made the incorrect decision and that Barrios should have seen red.

He said: “Clearly England are getting no justice with the VAR system because there is a clear altercation as Henderson is pushing the defender, but what you can see after that is the player puts his head on Henderson’s chest, which is a yellow card, but he then moves his head up to the chin which is clearly violent conduct and a red card.

“He knows what he is doing and this is a premeditated act.”

Clattenburg went on to question why the referee did not review the incident himself, believing a second glance at the altercation could have resolved the issue.

He added: “Rather than the video referee giving his opinion I would have liked to have seed him send the referee to the review area so he can have a second chance to see it himself.”
