Premier League manager confirms interest in signing Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has confirmed his interest in signing Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne on loan next month.

Clyne has found himself down the pecking order at Anfield due to injuries and the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold over the last two seasons.

Could Clyne leave Liverpool in January? Five things to know:

  1. Clyne joined Liverpool in the summer of 2015 and was a regular during his first two seasons at the club.
  2. A serious back injury saw him miss the majority of the 2017/18 campaign, during which time Alexander-Arnold emerged as a starter for the Reds.
  3. Joe Gomez has filled in for Alexander-Arnold at right-back on occasion this term as Clyne has struggled with more injuries.
  4. The former Southampton defender returned to training this week and is in contention to play against Manchester United on Sunday due to Alexander-Arnold’s ankle problem.
  5. But Klopp has hinted he has other options, and Warnock looks to be on hand to offer Clyne regular football elsewhere.

“January is such a difficult window and you can sometimes pay over the top,” Warnock said in his press conference, according to Wales Online, ahead of Cardiff’s Premier League trip to Watford this weekend.

“It’s as difficult as I’ve ever seen it.”

Asked if Cardiff are interested in Clyne, he said: “Yes.

“I know Nathaniel. I gave him his debut, a lovely lad and I know his mother well she is a wonderful woman.”

Clyne and Warnock have previously worked together at Crystal Palace with the full-back making 51 appearances under the current Cardiff boss.

Will Clyne start for Liverpool against Man United?

With Alexander-Arnold and Gomez ruled out of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United, Clyne may be handed a rare start at right-back.

However, Klopp has suggested Liverpool don’t want to rush the 27-year-old back as they have other options who can slot into the defensive line.

“Clyne is a very experienced player – it’s not ideal and we won’t rush him,” Klopp said on Friday, according to BBC Sport.

“Rafa Camacho played outstandingly in pre-season and Curtis Jones too.

“We have other options and as long as we have options everything is fine. We have to be creative if not but all fine for the moment.”

Neither Camacho nor Jones has made a single first-team appearance for Liverpool so far this season.

One of those youngsters starting against Manchester United would likely increase the chances of Cardiff making a move for Clyne in the January transfer window.

Alternatively, Klopp could opt for the reliable James Milner to play as a full-back – the midfielder predominantly played at left-back in 2016/17.
